My stackmat isn't working as it should. When I take of my hands from the timer the time doesn't always start.
If I am having my hands about 2-3 cm above the timer it still is like I am having the hands on the timer.

What can be wrong? Maybe just the batteries?

Does it turn on? If it does, try randomly timing/playing with it. If it happens to shut down mid-way/mess up mid-way, I would try replacing the batteries. Also open it up with a screwdriver and see if there are any loose wires.

Worth my time learning OLL skips for semi-sledgehammer cases or should I just (R' F R F') them and deal with what appears?

I'm no expert on this, but some of those algs look horrible. I think you have to ask yourself, if you need to pause before insertion, add a look to identify the case, then do one of those algs... if it would have have been easier to do the insertion then OLL.
Though if you think any of those are simple to do and easy to identify, they're no harm in keeping it in mind for taking advantage of rare occasions.
I think people tend to recommend learning a few of the simpler Winter Variation cases too.

Has cube4you.com become any more reliable a retailer recently? I'm looking to buy a few 3x3x4's and they have the best price on them, but I've heard they can be a bit of a pain to deal with. Also what are there shipping times to the US like?

square one question

If you bring the square one into a cube shape and then pair each corner with the edge that belongs clockwise from it, you would essentially reduce the solving to solving a 2x2 with the subgroup {U,D,R2} by treating the corner/edge pair as one piece. Is there a method for this?
