Adapting 3x3 Algorithms to 4x4 and Higher Cubes

What is the general principal for adapting 3x3 algorithms to the 4x4 and higher cubes? Algs involving just the outer layers work without change, but algs with double-layer turns don't work. An example is from the excellent "2 Look OLL" reference page on Badmephisto's website. To fix "Chameleon" on a 3x3 we can do (r U R' U') (r' F R F') but this doesn't work on a 4x4 due to the double-layer 'r' (sometimes written Rr). Is there a simple adjustment to the double-layer turns or do we just stick to the outer layers? I know that fixing "Chameleon" on a 4x4 using only the outer layers is a matter of (R U R') U (R U2 R'), but I'm looking for a general way to apply more of the 3x3 algs that I know and find to the 4x4 and higher.

The idea with a wide layer turn on 3x3 is that it turns one layer and rotates, so r is L x. Do the same for 4x4 and it means you are turns the 3 right layers at once.

im kinda new here and have a f2l question.
my f2l is under 10 sec now including the cross
usually 8
but i notice something interesting
at high speed there s less time to look around the cube during a pair for look ahead
so when i see a corner passing by sometimes i ignore it cuz i cant find the edge pair and guess its stuck in wrong slot
but sometimes no
sometimes i track that corner and find an edge somehow on U face and solve
or pull the edge out later from the wrong slot cuz ive been tracking that piece alone
heres the problem
how do you guys determine whether you track that corner or ignore and lookfor a pair thats both on U
when you dont know where the edge piece is or whether or not there is an another pair?

I generally just look for a corner and follow it. I find if I try to look for a different one that may be an easier case, I end up slowing down quite a bit and it doesn't end up being worth it.

Thank you for your reply.!
Yeah. I've been experiencing that recently alot, which made my time vary a little day to day.
Any ways, thanks alot!. I'll consider that during my solve. :)

Can someone giv me a list of algortithms I need to learn if I'm doing f2l intuitivly? I mean hard cases

I would personally recommend learning none of those algs. When I was at your stage I would do some very slow in times solves just trying to figure out different ways of solving the pair. To this day I still do that occasionally when watching TV or something like that.

How quick should i be able to solve rubiks puzzles in order to compete?

What sort of times should i get in the following puzzles to be able to enter competition without looking stupid???
Puzzles i would like to know the times for:
2x2
3x3
4x4
5x5
Thanks guys

Best/ fastest 2x2 methods

Which are the fastest methods for solving 2x2 (i know that there isn't a fastest one but please tell me the fastest 3 methods
Thanks

You will NOT look stupid in a competition with any times. Note however, there is often cut off times for puzzles. For example 2:10 for the 5x5 meaning that you can not go over that time, this is usually done to save time in competitions. Just focus on beating some of your personal best times, don't worry about anybody else's times or about looking stupid.
