I just started 5x5 speed, how do people do H and Z perms on the last step? Do you use algs that don't use M slices? Or is there a decent way to turn all three M slices?

For H-Perm on big cubes I use:
R2 U2 R U2 R2 U2 R2 U2 R U2 R2 or z' U D L2 U' D' x' U' D' L2 U D.
I cant give you a good alg for Z-Perm but check out the PLL site on the wiki and find the alg that you are most comfortable with.

Any good tips on how to improve on 2x2 Ortega? I think I'm pretty good at planning and executing the first layer, but my look ahead isn't that great, so there's usually some pause before OLL, and also a slight pause when recognizing the PBL case. I think the last one is my biggest problem. Also, should I bother learning the Y-Perm, A-perm and whateveritis-perm (where one layer should swap horizontally and one diagonally) upside down to reduce cube rotations? I average around 8, most of the time sup-8, but I get a sub-8 average every now and then.

Generally, how long does it take for HK Now Store and Lightake to have a package sent to the michigan area?

(weilong from HKNow and DIY 50mm/assembled 55mm zhanchis from lightake if that makes a difference)
from tracking, it said lightake shipped it on 6/19 but the tracking number doesn't work and HK Now is "Processed Through Sort Facility" as of 6/20

I don't remember if I ordered from Lightake, but from HK Now it took maybe a little more than a week. That's to Sweden though, but at least gives you a hint on what to expect :)

My solves are like 1:30 so I don't need to switch. But when should I? When I get sub 40?

You're going to get a lot of different answers
but in my opinion, you should switch to an "intermediate" cube until you're around 25/almost sub 20. Switch to dayans (2nd and later) when you pass sub 25. I would consider intermediate cubes to be the Dayan Taiyan, SS wind (or all SS cubes), all alpha cubes, all ghost hand cubes, and all type F cubes.

This might be because I used an A1 until I was almost sub 20 but basically switch cubes when you feel like the cube is holding you back. It's better to use cubes that don't corner cut as well so that your turning style is more accurate and you are forced to go slower during your solves. When you do switch to the faster cubes, it will be easier for you to improve your times because you are used to going slower and looking ahead more.
