I was just doing a solve, and on my last turn, an edge popped out. The whole cube was solved, no layers miss aligned. Would that be a DNF, or would it still count?

In a competition a judge would have seen, if it has been a pop or not. So, if not a pop, the cube was solved, otherwise DNF.

as for how 1 edge could have gotten flipped, maybe the whole cube was solved except for 2 flipped edges.
maybe you have like 2 tps, so instead of doing an alg to flip them you just popped out an edge and flipped it, popped out the next one, left it out, and stopped the timer.
oh and the judge wasn't looking the whole time.

I'm a very new cuber, maybe 1.5 weeks. I average about 1:20 seconds with my fastest being 55. A problem I have had lately is in regards to setting up the cross. I can usually solve it in 8 to 4 seconds. I've read online and watched some videos on techniques. They told me to be able to plan the cross solve in my head, but I can't.. unless it's a lucky case. I've tried using more than the 15 seconds but I just cant visualize it. Any tips? I've tried the whole closing eyes thing but that didn't work to well. Thanks =)

Which algorithm is popular for this COLL case?

im not so into COLL but the one i'm using is this:
R' U2 R F U' R' U' R U F'

your average is pretty high, try not to worry too much about this. people say 8 moves or lower, but that's really not necessary yet. when you're like sub-20 and you still can't, then that's when you have a problem.

at this point, just try. you don't even have to get it right.

for example, i learned x-cross at sub-30 and didn't start actually using it till sub-16 or so. i watched a video tutorial that told me i need to be able to make corner-edge pairs easily on the cube, visualize relationships and corner movement, but i just couldn't. it felt so out of reach. now im pretty good at it just from time and solving the cube a lot.
also, looking ahead in F2L was impossible. seeing multiple pairs and doing them at once was impossible, recognizing COLL was impossible, intuitively orienting LL edges was impossible, predicting PLL cases was impossible, recognizing G perms was impossible, and double flicks were impossible.

sorry for the paragraph but i remember thinking all those things at some point and no one was around to tell me not to worry and how easy it'll be later on. so there.

i'll give you an example though. first a good way to do the cross, then how i'd do it. put yellow on top and red on the front for this.

R2 D F2 R2 U2 L2 D R2 D' R2 B2 F D' L2 U2 F R F2 D R2 F'

a good way to think about it is to not insert 1 piece at once at the correct spot, but to get the cross right as if the centers weren't there. that means to get each of the 4 pieces in the correct spot relative to each other then turn the D layer to align them with the centers.

U' F2
the green is put to the right of red, which is the correct relative position.
D'
now since orange goes across from red, we can put that in now and finish the cross with F' D2 L, or we could instead put the blue across from green first with F R' F2 D2

how i'd do it: D' L2 U' F R' D2

D' L2 gets the green edge in the correct position relative to the red one.
instead of inserting the orange one with F, i bring the blue piece above the orange on the F face with U', then when i insert the orange one F, the blue one is set up to be insert with R', then D2 to align the cross.

another way to do it, also 6 moves, is F L2 D L2 D L
after the F turn, you'll notice that all the edges are either already in the bottom, or in the left layer, and all of them are facing the right way to be inserted with L turns only.
since green goes to the left of orange, i do L2.
since red goes to the left of green, i do D L2.
and the last piece is blue, so i align the cross and insert it with D L.

hope this helped. just 2 efficient ways to finish that cross. im sure there are more ways.

That's the wrong case!

ok i could swear the two F corners were not the same color when i looked at it.

anyway, i'll redo it sorry. my alg for that case is actually x R' U' R D' R' U z' U2 R D' R' U' R D x'
it's a terrible alg and i've only used it a few times in speedsolves. normally i just to OLL PLL for that case since it gives adj swap.

I'm having trouble figuring out a rhythm/finger-tricks for OLL #1: (R U2) (R2' F R F' U2') (R' F R F').

The couple videos I found on YouTube are not very fast or technique-oriented. Anyone know of a good video? Anyone have a good description of how to approach this one?

Thanks.

I think of it like this: (R U2 R') (R' F R F') ( U2') (R' F R F') [U2 with left index]
