Is there an alg that doesn't effect the "cross" pieces? The alg I use right now to pair this would be : (note the lower case moves are wide turns)

u' R F' U R' F u'

Its the alg for the last 2 edges, but I frequently used to use this alg when doing regular 2pair. however I don't want to use this then mess up the cross and have to redo it. Redundant, given one of the objectives of the method (have cross already done)

Is there an alg for pairing these 2 up that does not effect the D layer?

Yesh... Look at what your algorithm is doing and then manipulate it so it doesn't Effect D Layer...
Or what Cyrus C. Said and cheat.

To the horrible ball core sq1 dude:
Take apart the pieces and sand down the little triangle bit that touches with the flat surface inside the core dome on all pieces.
Lube both surfaces of the core dome (straw spray the inside with a 90deg /turn) and assemble.
For further lubing, take out one corner cap on each layer and spray lube.
Hope helpfull.

I'd never count on factory settings. My Megaminx for example was so varied from side to side when I took it apart to work on it I was astonished at how uneven the tensions actually were. I'd say always check the tensions unless you set them yourself or you order a Lubix cube that comes modified.

Thanks.
But I assume modded cubes such as the Haiyan Memory have even tensions right?
And is there any benefit to not having even tensions on all sides?

Haiyan memory cubes are just AV's that have a mod done. No tensions are messed with in the process (as part of the mod)

There is no good reason to have the tensions set differently, except in this one case (I can't think of others)

Phil Yu (a small kitten on here) keeps his guhong for OH different tensions on sides (to control the speed) because he uses ZZ with a fixed (YB?) orientation so he has it optimized for performance.

Other than that, equal tensions are recommended.

F2L:
Is it better to do "d/d' " or a cube rotation?
How many cube rotations u do during f2l?
at what avg should one learn look ahead?

MY avg is 45sec:
4LL=15 sec
X =5 sec
F2L=25 sec

I would say personal preference with d/d' or cube rotations. I would say that most really fast people do d/d' if possible.

You should minimise cube rotations, but don't worry about it when performing an algorithm if you can perform it faster with a rotation. You should aim for no more than 4; one for each pair.

You should learn lookahead as soon as possible.
