How do you break in a 2x2?
For ES: Throw it at a wall three times, and lube it with shock oil.
I'm not liable for any broken cubes.
Seriously?

Ive been cubing for exactly 1 week now. The method i use for the 3x3 is the beginner method I believe.
Get one side
Orient edge pieces ( U R U R' U' F' U' F) or reverse of that
Get opposite side cross ( F U R U' R' F')
Get opposite side complete ( R U R' U R U U R')
Orient corners ( R' F R' B2 R F' R' B2 R2)
Orient last edge pieces ( L2 U' B F' L2 B' F T' L2)
Is there any advice that anyone can give me that will shorten these steps a bit? I don't want to jump straight into the advanced stuff, I'd like to learn all the basics first. I can get 57.07 with this, but I'd like to get better, any shortening tips?

I don't get it.
Is there a video I can watch explaining the method?

Yeah. That method is atrocious. Learn how to intuitively do the middle layer instead of using those "algs" for it. I'll try and explain it for you...
Say you have red green edge you want to get into the middle layer. First look at which color sticker is on the front side of that edge, and then hold that side towards you. So say Red is on the front side, and green on the top of the edge, rotate so that red is now on front. Line the reds up.
Now look what side the edge needs to go to. Now assuming you use white cross, this means that green is to the right of the red. This is where that edge needs to go, between the red and green centers. Whichever way that edge needs to go, do an opposite U turn. so the edge needs to go to the right, do a U, if it needed to go to the left, you would do a U'.
Now pretend you were inserting a corner. Do R U' R' and it will pair the corner and edge at the right. You can then insert those by doing F R' F' R.
For edges that need to go to the left, simply do the mirror. So line up the color edge with the center, do a U' this time because it needs to go to the left and U' is opposite that direction. L' U L to pair the edge with the corner, and F' L F L' to insert them both.
When you have the wrong edge stuck in the middle layer, simply line up a non middle layer edge (one with yellow on it) in place of what would normally be a middle layer edge, and insert that into the middle layer to kick the wrong middle layer edge out.
If you're confused by this, I wouldn't be surprised. Explaining stuff like this in text is tough.
Person-action-object(PAO) systems are very good. You can check Roman rooms or the journey method in the memory methods thread.I use 3op, so I use a number based system. What is a good letter based memorisation method for 3x3x3 BLD corners? Also. does it matter when you perform Parity in a BLD solve?
Can I mod a ES 2x2 to have the screw/spring mech?
If so how difficult is it? Because I know 2x2's aren't that much, and if its really tough I'll probably just buy a better 2x2
Would someone please recommend an IRC client to me for use on Mac OSX?
It's been a while, so I'll try again.

theyre the same model, the preformance would be about the same, though I think the quality of the white plastic will be sturdier and help your recognition.

They both come in white...
The first one is a YUGA cube, nice, but locks up a bit and doesn't have extraordinary corner cutting. The second one is a great cube, very smooth, cuts corners. Bothe are fairly quiet. What is the difference between the two type D's? ie. ability to cut corners, loudness, ect.
