Okay so..
I've been cubing for about 2 months, I use Intuitive F2L, 2 look OLL and 2 look PLL.

What sorta times should i be getting?

Oh okay. So do you guys (or in competitions do they) ever just.... scramble it mindlessly? That's all I do.. (Side note, an ipod touch App I'm using, when you're done timing it says "next scramble: blah blah", so that's where that curiosity started. )

I prefer using computer generated scrambles because I hate scrambling. I really, really hate scrambling. Reading them is fun when it takes you about 10 seconds for 25 moves =P. Also this way if you get a lucky one, it counts, because it is completely random, not left to human ability. In competitions all scrambles are generated.

First, thanks for the reply.

Second.. I guess I don't really understand. When you see a scramble you actually do those moves on the cube before starting? Seems like that'd be something to hate way more than just mindlessly turning stuff over and over.

?

Although, *shrug* it's not real important or anything, I'm just tryin' to understand. I jumped into this cubing thing overnight and read an awful lot of terms and shorthand and methods and all that stuff that apparently are normal that I have no idea about.

ya dig?

:)

In laymans terms, it is just to ensure that no human error can be made in the scrambling (doing certain patterns multiple times, etc.).

I've made the decision that I'd like to "get into" and learn to solve Rubik's cubes. Now I'm sure everyone has said this and never gone through with it, but I feel I'm determined to do so (if that matters to anyone).

I have a 3x3x3 cube, but it is really old. My dad had it when he was a kid and he's 42 years old, so I really don't want to use it. I fear that I might want to lube it up one day and try to pop out one of the pieces and crack it and ruin the cube.

My question is, as a beginner, would buying the "Cube4you 3x3x3 Speed Cube" (link is - http://www.cube4you.com/461_Cube4you-3x3x3-Speed-Cube(Porcelain-White).html) be a good idea for a beginner?

As of now, I cannot solve 1 side of a cube. I've tried doing so without looking up any guides or anything like that, and I find it doesn't work going at it without any knowledge of how to do it.

Thank you for reading my post and any help is appreciated!

I'm new to the site and don't know how to tell when someone reply to something I've written. I'm sure there is a way; can someone please reply quickly.

You can't tell when some one has replied unless you go on the thread occasionally.:cool::cool:

Use the "thread tools" drop down that you see at the top of your thread (when viewing it), and subscribe to it, with the instant email notification. You'll at least then know someone has replied to the thread, be it directed to you or not..

*shrug*, I'd do.. what I did. Just buy one from a store and learn to solve it comfortably before worrying about a speed cube. If you need a guide, which I imagine you will, there are tons. But I can recommend this guy, it's who I used and was very good for beginners. There are 9 or so videos in that 7 step series.

Congratulations on making the decision to get into cubing. You should probably check out this site: www.youtube.com/badmephisto and look for the how to solve a rubik's cube tutorial. After that watch how to become a speedcuber and follow those steps.

Also the Cube4you DIY is a good cube, but if you want to start cubing now you should probably just get a store bought from target or toys r' us and break that in.

Okay, special thanks to both of you.

Boogisan I'd say don't bother with a speedcube early on. The advatage of using a stiff cube at first, is that you won't start doing really retarded finger tricks. My little brother started on a DIY and he does some of the dumbest stuff I've ever seen....

For you experienced cubers....

He does U with his middle, and his hand literally off the cube

He does ALL U' s with his thumb.....

He tries to do M slice Ring finger but he doesn't hold the cube right to do it

All of which he wouldn't ever try on a stiff cube, because it wouldn't work, because those finger tricks are STUPID. Seriously his U2 just looks like he's slapping the cube.

I really, really need to improve my times!

I'm averaging 40 seconds right now using intuitive F2L with 4LLL.
The LL takes me about 10 seconds, so thats alright so far, ... b u t, ... my Cross + F2L takes about 30 seconds!

What can I do do improve that time?

Thanks!
(I didn't want to start a new thread ;) )
