When you come from the beginner LL where you only need to know like 3 algs if I recall well, you might not get so much faster. This is because you might perform the newly learned algs slower than the others that you've been practicing for a while before, and also you might loose some time on recognition at the moment, even though recognition is really easy on 4LLL. If you just learned it in a few hours and it was today, it means your algs are still not in your muscle memory. So you might hesitate while performing it, thinking about the moves and so on. An algorithm that is correctly performed is one where your eyes identify the case you're facing, and your fingers start moving and performing it without even thinking of the moves you're doing.

Anyway, it means you can do the F2L within a minute, and the last layer takes you about 50sec, which is a lot to perform 4 algs. This will definitely go down as you learn / optimize your fingertricks. Try to think your algs as groups of moves that you can perform fast without regripping. It is called a trigger, like RUR'U' or R'FRF'. Otherwise you can probably get a lot faster on your F2L ( including cross ), within a few days if you practice good.

Also, 1:50, you'll still progress quickly until sub60-sub50, whatever you do, just keep solving and keep the fun !

Thank you! :)
I ticked 5 more seconds off my average and I beat my record of 1:26. I got 1:22, but that was because of pure luck. When I did the first layer cross, two first layer corners were permuted by chance. You're right. I still have to think of the algs as I do them and I sometimes mess up. I'm sure I can get faster, though. At this point, should I begin learning Fridrich F2L or should I focus on something else? I believe my cross does. Like the other guy mentioned, 20 seconds is just too slow.

Practise them more, and it'll help a lot. If you're not familiar with algs, they won't be as fast. But your cross needs practise. 20 seconds is not good for a cross. When you're doing untimed solves, try looking for ways to make it more efficient.

I believe my problem with the cross is that it's intuitive. I have to think. It doesn't help that since I can't do Fridrich F2L yet, I have to insert the first layer corner pieces as well. I can fix the second layer edges almost automatically and once I recognize the cases on the last layer, I can do the algs pretty smoothly. It still takes me roughly a minute to do the last layer alone, though.

Really? 1 minute? Can you record yourself? Not to put you down, just wondering what you are doing.

Thank you! :)

I would have started with F2L before 4LLL, but yes, you could start if you feel ready for it. You might get worse times in the first few days, but after that it'll go down to sub10 if you eventually practice enough. And of course you can go much faster. Maybe just record yourself and look at it, you'd be impressed how many pauses and hesitation you have, how smoother your moves can get etc.

A bit of a weird question, I was doing a solve today, and at my last F2L pair, it turned out that everything was done except a J Perm on the R face. It wrecked my solve because I was confused. What are the odds of this occuring?

It's alright. :)
Criticize me all you want. I learned how to solve a cube for the first time only a month ago. I know I've got plenty to learn. Maybe I'll record myself soon, but I don't think I'm ready yet. I can tell you my observations, though. I use very few finger shortcuts. My fingers can't seem to flick the faces hard enough to make them turn. I rotate the cube several times since I can only do algs on the FR and FL slots during my first two layers. I can now do the first layer cross in about 16 seconds. Before, I averaged 20 seconds and 15 moves on the first layer cross so I decided I could try one move per second. I really want to get that cross in less than 10 seconds, though. Right now, I can't even solve the last layer with 2-look OLL and 2-look PLL. Forcing myself to shave 4 seconds off my cross was so exhausting my mind keeps messing up the algs. Here's a rundown. I've competed the first layer cross by 16 seconds, the entire first layer by 35, the second layer by 50. And the last layer by 1:45. My fastest time is 1:22. I appreciate any tips. :)

It's alright man, don't get discouraged. But indeed, your last layer is really poor. The question of above is interesting, what cube do you use ? You just need practice, but since your first two layers are quite slow as well, I would rather focus on this. You just learned 4LLL a day ago in a few hours. It'll probably take you a week or so to get better at running the algs and recognizing them. Like I said, try to get the good moves ( would be easier if you use a good cube though, rubik's storebought can be really bad for fingertricks ). Try to group the moves of your algs by triggers. Also try to practice the sexy move between solves ( RUR'U' ), if you do it 6 times you come back to the original state so it's easy to just run it for a while and then start to work on a solve again. Try first to do it slowly, then start to slowly accelerate. You can also do the same between solves. To train yourself when you do a session maybe do a solve, then each LL alg you know, solve again etc for 3-5 times. Just to get your fingers warmed up and to work on your algs and fluidity.

Hope this helps !

How do I practice my cross?
I've practiced crosses by just solving the cross, scrambling again, then solving the cross again
but then my cross to F2L transition is horrible when I go to do a solve
Additionally, any tips for reducing cube rotations?
I have way too many rotations per solve

thanks

Try to do slow crosses as well, like really having thought before you perform the moves, how you're gonna hold the cube and how the pieces will move. I usually plan the whole cross and don't move the cube while solving the cross, I don't really do any look ahead but I find not moving the cube helping a lot to spot the first pair. I don't mind having to do F or B moves. If you do 2-3tps on the cross you can do any cross in 2-4sec which is already fair depending on how fast you solve it at the moment.

How many moves do you do usually for you cross ? Also like everyone says, BLD cross is a good exercise to do from time to time, it helps to learn how to plan the whole cross and later on to look ahead.

And finally, depending on your average, I wouldn't put too much effort in the cross if you're still sup40, except you take 20sec to get it done.

I'm not sure what you mean by RUR'U'. I've heard it a couple of times, but I don't really know what it's for except it makes for good exercise for my fingers. My cube is soft enough. I believe I just need more strength.
And would you mind elaborating when you suggested a training method? I didn't really get that. What should I focus on right now, you think? Thanks! :)

RUR'U' is just a sequence of moves which you can perform without regripping your cube, it's called a trigger. This one is probably the most famous because it is the easiest to perform and is present in many algorithms.

Here I got you a T perm for example : (R U R' U') (R' F R2 U' R' U') (R U R' F'). The parenthesis show the blocks I perform without regripping the cube. This also allows you to work on the 3 parts independently, and then later to put them together. Also you'll find that some come back a lot in different algorithm, which always makes them easier to learn, since you remember them by a sequence of 3-4 triggers, rather than specific single moves which can get confusing and tedious to learn.

About the "training" method, it was more of a warm up thing to get better at your LL algs, I do this myself with PLL algs at the moment since I learned them recently. When I know I'll be cubing and timing myself for a while I first start an ao5 and between each solve, I quickly do every PLL alg, or at least the ones that are the most problematic.

Did you start with F2L already ? If not I'd start as soon as possible. It'll probably be a little hard at first, and slow, but by the time your 4LLL gets better your F2L should start to be ok.
