How to practice/improve color recognition (for F2L pairs)
I think he's referring to look ahead.
If there was a simple and fast way to get good look ahead, then everyone would be sub-15. It's difficult, and it takes a lot of time. First, it's important to know your F2L cases so well you can do them automatically without even thinking about them. If you need to follow your current F2L cubies in order to pair and insert them, then you're not able to scan the cube for your next pair. For me, the best way of training was blind F2L solving. I open my eyes, spot a corner-edge pair, close my eyes, pair and insert. Then repeat until F2L is complete. If that can't be done accurately and comfortably, then more time needs to spent working on your F2L cases. Slow solves at a steady pace are also helpful for working on look ahead. My opinions on look ahead have been largely influenced by cyoubx, and I found his video on the topic very informative. I tried to work on look ahead since I started cubing, but it was only after F2L became automatic that I made any real progress at all. It was only recently that I could say I used look ahead consistently in my solves. It takes a lot of time and practice. I wish there was a shortcut to good look ahead.
