I'm fairly new to 5x5/7x7 speedsolving when it comes to reduction; Is the best method to do all but 4 edges, align centers correctly and then solve those last 4 edges? Is there a good tutorial on how to finish the 4 wrong edges for the 5x5 and 7x7? Is Yau worth it for 5x5? and for 7x7? If so what edge pairing should I use with Yau? I'm very comfortable with Yau on the 4x4.

Whats the best edge flip parity for the 5x5?

I'm using the 4x4 OLL parity alg as a fix when I get a single bad edge for the 5x5, is this a good way to go?

What you are referring to is called Freeslicing I believe. It is the most used advanced edge pairing method for 5+ cubes. Yau is not worth it imo.

For the last 4 edges I put them in the top layer replacing them with finished edges, and start building them up. During this step I try to pair them and avoid parity if at all possible. When you are on the last four edges, getting down to two is rather simple. use THIS for last two edges I only learned the lol, 2-swap, lolol and O-parity and I can get by just fine. the rest are just mirrors and flips.

If you define "bad edge" as parity then yes.

Yes they do, except shengshou never announce new versions of their 4x4, so everyone just assumes its a v3, seeing as there are practicaly no differences which can be seen from the outside.

Then how do i know when ordering it if I am getting a V5 or V4? I have heard the 4 needs modding while the 5 doesn't.

Watch this video for edges: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XvdxmJHDtF8

Is there something wrong if the tracking number from lightake has been saying "Origin Post is Preparing Shipment" since June 22nd? With no updates since then? package was shipped on June 19th.

for anything bigger than 4x4, it is best to use reduction. Yau just limits things too much for big cubes. It is possible to do yau on 5x5 but it's not very good.
Do all centers, solve all but 4 edges, realign all centers, solve last 4 edges (I do them 1 by 1 but there's probably a better way). I think edges are pretty intuitive other than last 2 edges.
For last 2 edges I basically do the method on 4x4 where it's just Uw' flip edge Uw until 1 or both edges are done. (probably not the best way but it works)
Don't use the OLL parity alg tor bad edges. Only use it for your last edge when it's needed.

Use this for some tips on edge pairing. It can apply to 7x7 too.

EDIT: double ninja'd but I have some info the other posts don't have

nope.tracking is rather inaccurate. sometime it does not get scanned in. are you using the usps site? if so then it is normal. my wittwo i ordered said it left newyork and didnt update til it actually arrived at my house. i thought it was running sooo late.

hi-ya x2

I think every cubing store now have the v5 instead of the v4.

However, for the modding that is not true, the v5 does not fix that many problems, and lock ups still occur.

Once I get it, what is the easiest way to tell?

I posted this in the clock thread and it appears to be getting buried, thought I'd have a better chance of an answer if I post here.

Question: would regulations 3j and/or 3h apply to this clock?

Haven't you seen me do it officially? Were you just staring at me thinking, "he is so disqualified" haha

Lol yeah, I remember you solving it really fast but I didn't remember you using the table.

Also, what is the best method for OH (don't say ZZ, cuz I've looked at it and it seems too difficult) shall I stick with Fridrich for it or swap methods and have a different method for OH?

Theoretically it is ZZ but I think it's too difficult too so I just stick with CFOP. It doesn't really matter what method you use. I saw someone use roux and get a good time with it (those LSE fingertricks were pretty good). There are lots of people that are sub 15 with CFOP in OH so you don't really need to switch methods, just adapt new fingertricks for cases that seem harder to do in OH.

those regulations only apply to twisty puzzles. your clock is not modified or dirty.

i hate the fact that they are not made anymore so it makes them hard to get or replace.

It is modified though, the edge clock colors are different than the corner and center clocks. The regulations refer to all "puzzles" too, despite the fact that they most readily apply to normal twisty puzzles. That's why I'd like a clarification here.

They both need modding but v5 just needs very little. Florian works the same for both, the difference is in the konstamod only and inner slices.

Both can be great with a decent amount of breaking in and 0 modding.

i am not too familiar with clocks, but since the different colors do not provide extra information, I don't see it being a problem at all. As long as it functions like a regular clock and the modifications do not make it easier to solve you should be fine. But as always the WCA delegate will make the final call. I would contact a WCA rep to be 100% sure then print out their reply.

I make custom magics, and I accidentally put the tiles in backwards so that to solve it you did the mirror of the standard solution and when I messaged them they said that is fine. Since it didn't make it easier. As long as the solution was the same.

I think it's fine.
Ask a WCA delegate (or hope one of them sees the post and replies) just in case.

On the topic of 4x4s, the easiest way to tell what you're getting is purchasing from an informed shop that knows exactly what they have. Most of the better shops specific to cubing should know which version they have in stock. Alternatively, get a picture of the pieces. There are threads that show the differences between the v4 and the v5.

As far as modding, I have a Florian and Konsta-modded v5 4x4 that is incredible. It cuts ~40 degrees on the outer slices, rarely pops, and almost never locks up. At the time I modded the cube it was still unknown that a new version of the 4x4 had been released, so I'm not sure how much the Konsta mod had an effect. However, the Florian modding I did was not minimal, and I highly doubt a non-modded v5 could approach how good this cube is. I personally think the modded cube has the potential to be far better than even the most broken in 4x4.

Yeah, your ruling on the magic makes me think that I would be fine here. Making edge clocks a different color than the corners just seems like it may aid the visualization here, just like having corner stickers on a 3x3 with flourescent colors and the edge/centers having normal colors. Clearly, that's not allowed, but this makes me wonder if clock could use some more specific regulations.

The clock is probably has one of the lowest participants. The corner/edge stickers on a cube makes a difference. But since clock faces are stationary it makes no difference when solving.
