Is it common for my cube to get looser during a session but then go back to normal? I'm finding that my Dayan Zhanchi is getting caught more frequently as my session goes on. Am I just getting sloppy? Or do heat and/or weather affect the cube on that small a basis?

Well, anything is possible. It is most likely a combination of everything. I've never really felt such variation in my cube before, but I think it would probably become more noticable the looser you get your cube.

Mine's clicky and blocky whatever I do by trial and error. Elrog implied there's a "sweet spot" so just wondering if there's a trick to finding it.

I haven't been able to evey really keep my tensions at the perfect tension. I do know that tensioning by hand (for me anyway) is very inaccurate. I'd suggest using some method to measure out your tensions. You could possibly count the amount of times threads on the screws go around where you can see them or measuring the distance from the core. I've heard of people using both of these methods, but I have not tried either of them. I like to use my Zanchi because I like having the textured tiles with custom colors. As to fining out what the "sweet spot" actually is, it is very possible that it would be slightly different for each cube. I'd recommend checking your tensions (with some kind of measurement) immediatly if you ever hit the sweet spot. Even this method won't be completely accurate though, because the cube will change with wear.

I think it's you. Before you're warmed up you're probably turning more smoothly and then getting choppier as the session goes on.

Yeah, it's definitely me. I just took an hour break, and now I'm turning it really smoothly again. Which means when my hands get tired, I'm either overturning or underturning (probably over).

I've read all the arguments against tensioning by hand, but I disagree. Tensions will vary from one cube to another, even from one face to another face on a single cube due to minor malformations in the plastic, slightly tilted screws, and variation in the springs. Plus, for me, the difference between that perfect tension and something that's off can be as little as a quarter screw turn (I can notice even less). I doubt there's any way to measure tensions that accurately. For each face, I get near the right tensions, then start adjusting the tensions in smaller and smaller increments until it feels just right.

Lubix Guhong Problems

I recently received a Lubix Guhong v1. It's smooth but there are are a few problems.

Firstly, I find that the cube pops on almost every solve I do, usually during the fingertricks.

Also, I don't know if this is exactly a cube problem, but I seem to overturn the layers most of the time and I lose control of my grip on the cube

EDIT: It seems much better after tensioning the cube and breaking it in. :)

Try to adjust your tension, I think you lubix guhong is too loose, Mine also had that problem at first but then i adjusted my tension to made it tighter and everything is fine now :) (Sorry for my bad english)

Thanks. I suspect you're right that it changes with time/wear. Either that or the sweet spot is just mythical. A cube that feels perfectly tensioned one day sometimes feels wrong the next.

Should I subscribe to this cuber? He uploads pretty regular but I'm not sure if he is good enough. What do you guys think? Are you guys gonna sub?

haha that's totally up to you. I'm already subscribed to him though if you think that makes a difference. He goes by MDiPalma on the forums, btw. I think he usually uses ZZ, though the video is with petrus

How should I tension a Dayan Guhong?

I have found a few threads on this issue but nothing that was really resolving my question. I recently bought a new guhong and just got it today. I broke it in and put some silicone lubricant in it. Right away I noticed it popped a lot more than my older cubes have. How much should I tension each face to get the best resulting speed cube?

Not sure which videos were posted, I'm guessing Camcubers or Crazybadcuber's, and cyoubx's. Basically if you are assembling a cube, have the tension at around a penny's width (pull on the center piece, and the amount of metal showing). Once assembled and lubed, then tension each side so it cuts 45 degrees perfectly. Tighten or loosen... blah blah blah.. watch cyoubx's video.

Thanks guys for the help. I did tension it a little bit more, but I did more solves on it. I probably just wasn't used to the speed of the cube, but I got used to it after about 35 solves or so. Also, it seems that the lube has spread to all the pieces, so the cube overall seems smoother and doesn't pop anymore.

:)

Is there a way to fix lock-ups of Rubik's brand cubes?

In the past few weeks, my cubing ability has significantly improved. However, I find that my current (And first) cube can no longer suffice for my needs. The main problem is that it locks up a lot, preventing me from anything consistently sub 30. I will be ordering a PanShi in a couple of weeks (As part of a deal I made with my parents), but is there anyway to get around the lock-ups in the meantime, without modding my cube to death? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks :)

This helps a bit.
