Just force yourself to always do what your changing your method to, it will start to feel more natural. Also, 5bld's guide seems really good. I'm not a roux solver but if I were, I'd go there to learn it.

Learning the cycling is the same thing as learning the direct alg. What's intuitive becomes algorithmic and whats algorithmic becomes intuitive with practice. Learn whatever way works best for you.

Only if you understand what you're doing. I see people blindly EO, and don't notice that a U' instead of U can make LR edges solved for example.

I am learning the Roux method, and I am wondering about edge orientation.

My question is this:
Should I try and learn the cycling or the direct alg?

Thank you in advance,

I never had any troubles taking mine. Not exactly sure what you're worried about. But you're right, TSA is rather strict and it's always a judgement call of the local TSA agents so no guarantees.

I recently started practicing OH. After only a few days of practice I've developed a massive hangnail on my left index finger. Now it hurts. Is this normal for people new to OH? Will I develop a callus over time or do I need to think about changing my technique?

It'll get better. Just keep doing OH. Maybe take a day off and soak your hand in some epsom salts (I think you can just buy them at CVS or another pharmacy) a few times whenever you get a hangnail. OH used to really kill my fingers too, but either they just got callused or I subconsciously changed my technique to make it stop.
