I was doing a 4x4 solve yesterday, and when I got to the edge pairing, a corner popped out. I popped it back in and hit the timer, but if I would've finished the solve, and left it popped out, would it have been a DNF?

I believe so, yes. Any pop is a DNF. i think before, if a 4x4 center came out, it wouldn't be a DNF or even a penalty (because it's one color), but I think they changed it so any popped piece is a DNF.

So if a centre piece popped out and I finished the solve and stopped the timer with the piece still popped, it would be a DNF?

That's not true!

If ONE piece with one sticker on it pops out, no DNF.
If more pieces with one sticker pops out, DNF
If a piece has no stickers pops out, no DNF regardless of amount.

EDIT: From WCA
5b5) If at the end of the attempt some parts of the puzzle are physically detached or not fully placed, the following regulations apply:
5b5a) If one or more parts without coloured faces is affected, the puzzle is considered solved.
5b5b) If one part with one coloured face is affected, the puzzle is considered solved.
5b5c) If more than one part with one coloured face is affected, the puzzle is considered unsolved (DNF).
5b5d) If one or more parts with more than one coloured face is affected, the puzzle is considered unsolved (DNF).
5b5e) Regulations 5b5c and 5b5d supersede 5b5a and 5b5b.

So if one center cap, or one 4x4 center piece pops out, and you stop the timer without fixing, no DNF or penalties.
If a corner pops out (how did you manage that?!) and you stop the timer without fixing, DNF.

Cool. Thanks a lot.

Any ideas for a different way to practise 3x3?

I've been doing a LOT of grinding speedsolves, and some slow solves as well. I fancy something different for a change but I still want it to be aimed at improving.

No. It's still any one-color piece does not have to be replaced.
This. But if two pieces with colours on pop, then it's a DNF.

Try OH with your weaker hand, but using the same method. It will not only get your weaker hand stronger, but it will also help with lookahead, as it forces you to turn slowly.
But most people do this anyway. More OH practise will help though!

Thanks everyone! I have no idea how I managed to only pop out a corner, it was on a modded SS v4. I just now tried to pop one out by hand, and I couldn't, so I don't know hkw that happened.

As far as I know, nobody has checked for shortened algs. I may get around to it one day, but right now I have a lot of algorithms already lined up to generate.

Thanks, it isn't really important for me to learn right now. Just some idea for a ZZ variation of insert corner+orient corners, insert edge, PLL as some LSLL method. It could be taken further to insert corner+orient corners, insert edge+permute corners, EPLL, but that's probably a little too far in terms of algs needed and it being worth knowing.
