I ordered a shengshou 4x4 V and just got it in the mail. Is there anyway to confirm it is a version 5. From first turns and piece comparisons it looks just like my old shengshou 4x4 which I've had for at least a year or two.

also, what is the quality of cubicle stickers?

Centers don't have the added lip that extends towards the core of the cube. Also, they have a small bump.
It's outlined in this vid: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7Y0Lh86zsXQ

What speedcube 3x3 is considered to be controllable and smooth? Is it the Guhong? And if so which version? Modded or not?

I'm thinking the WeiLong is too much for me right now.

By "controllable" I assume the problem is you are using cubes that are too loose, so tighten it up a bit. Guhong and Zhanchi are both smooth. I think Guhong v2 is really good if you're looking for a nice and smooth cube.

I have a CPM Zhanchi, WeiLong and FangShi and all of them are not easily controllable at no matter what tensions (Zhanchi can be but when I tighten it too much it gets too lock-uppy (Is that a word?)). I suppose I should try a Guhong V2 with some 50k diff oil on the pieces as well, see how that turns out. I have a Guhong V2 but it's stickerless.

I suppose I just need to try and overlube a bit maybe. Do you think the Guhong V2 needs to be modded (48P mods or such) to be great? I kinda dont feel like modding anything smaller than a 4x4.

The shengshou aurora is cheap and is really smooth. Not the best cube in the world, but it's very solid and controllable.

I find the Fangshi very controllable compared to the Weilong.

I never mod my 3x3 cubes so I couldn't comment on that. Unfortunately no such cube exists that allows a reasonably tight tension while having minimal lock-ups. I guess this is the ultimate goal, but I don't know if it is even possible. It's a compromise, and I would suggest adapting your solving style to suit either looser cubes or cubes that lock-up. I would strongly recommend you go the path of trying to deal with a loose cube, as that's what all the fast people do. A long time ago I chose the path of the tight cube that locks-up, and I am forever slow because of it.

Tighten your zhanchi and put a fair amount of lube on the pieces. Or leave the tension and just try a bit more lube.

I'm gonna go ahead and buy the SS Aurora since it apparently is more of an intermediate cube that would match my times. It is dirt cheap, too (5.56 dollars shipping included).

Thanks for all the help! If the Aurora doesnt turn out well I still have my WL/SR/Zhanchi + loads of different lubes to play with.

there are no rules u can compete with any 3x3 of any size but it should not be stickerless. please read rules on WCA before posting.
