1. For F3L, I'm only inserting one piece at a time (unless they're already connected), and finding it rather slow. I read somewhere else there are tricks to doing this more efficiently. Are there? If so, how do they work? Or is this just sheer speed?

Sure. You'll find them out by messing around. It's hard to document that kinda stuff.

It'll surprise you how much you can use cancellations. Like between every single alg.

Do you rotate? If so, stop doing so and you'll notice that your lookahead starts to go crazyfast. I never pause in my F3L

Do you have corners already solved? If not you don't get the advantage of being able to use all the mad tricks that work on 5x5x5 too.

2. So, my ELL still sucks as it always has. I'm currently just doing basic 3-cycles. I figure there's better ways to doing this, but for now I also figure I should simply experiment as it's meant to be very intuitive. However, how should I approach parity? Currently, I just do a "single edge flip" algorithm and finish off with a 3-cycle (if necessary). I also heard somewhere that in order to solve parity you're actually also switching two centre pieces of the same colour. Is this true?

Did you read the ELL page on my site? :p Also Dan's video.

Can practicing 5x5 improve 4x4 and 3x3 times?

4x4: Yes, definitely. I found a ten second drop (from 1:35) in my 4x4 solves with a 1:30 drop (from 4:50 ugh) of 5x5. Recognition improves with practicing 5x5.

3x3: I didnt find much of a difference. I suppose finger speed could be increased and recognition could, but it is not a huge difference in what I have seen.

Oh. I've been doing my F3L very systematically, so I haven't really been messing around much. I suppose I should. :p
I rotate a lot. I didn't realise that was bad. Thanks, though.
I assume you mean the corners of the first layer. Yes. I always have them solved by the time I get to F3L. Also, I only have a 5x5 (no 4x4; it broke) at the moment.
Lastly: What are cancellations? And how can I incorporate them into my solves? (Sorry if that's a stupid question; I genuinely don't know, though)
PS: I still haven't timed myself with K4, so I have no idea where I'm at.

Um. Don't think so. Do you mean this one? Also, Dan's video? I don't know who that is, nor do I know the video (most likely).

PS: I currently don't have a lot of time on my hands (so can't do that now) and shall probably get back to this later, but I'm replying so long so that I don't lose the reply due to the speed at which this thread moves. >.>
Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated.

I have a 30second avg, sub 35 time.
How many solves a day do you guys recommend for me, if i wanted to reach sub 20 in a few months?

It's kinda different for everyone. You should be able to see yourself if you're making progress with your practice schedule. I was only doing 200 solves a week while I was just sub30 and didn't make any progress for 4-5months... but then when I finished sorting out all my algs, and doing lots of slow solves to really optimise my F2L I started to make lots of progress (~29 to ~25 in a month). So while I'm sure if you're doing one or two hundred solves a day you'll probably get fast quickly, also be sure that you're practicing well (trying to overcome any problems that are holding you back, e.g. move count, look ahead, LL recognition...)

What does mean "standard deviation"?

In cubing terms: The standard deviation gives you an idea on how consistent are your solves. The lower the standard deviation the more consistency. If you have a high standard deviation, your times are somehow different for each solve.
If you are interested in a better definition you should look in any basic statistics book.

Ok, now let the statisticians come and correct me. :)
