Ok, nice thread!!!!

I know DNF is Did Not Finish

DNS means Did Not Start??? Why would a competitor not start???(Ok 2 questions)

I saw DNS at the WCA site....

I'm pretty sure it means "did not solve" or something...
a DNS is usually for BLD I think...

DNS is "did not start". Did not solve would be the same as did not finish, it would imply that you tried it but did not complete it.

I don't think thats a fair rule. Then someone who gets a 15/31, which I think is pretty amazing, does worse than someone who gets a 1/1 or even a 0/0???

Neither of your examples are multi's.

True, a 2/2 then. So a 2/2 is better than a 15/31? That doesn't seem fair to me, in a way.

I think it's pretty reasonable, actually. You need to be reasonably accurate if you're going to attempt a big multi, otherwise you really should be doing a smaller number of cubes.

I felt like my 6/10 at Ohio was a total failure. It certainly wasn't worth more than 2/2, and I think it's highly justified that if someone else had gotten a 2/2, they would almost certainly have beaten me (because they would have had a faster time than me for my 6/10). I think that's a perfect relationship - if anyone had gotten a 2/2, they would have deserved to win. It's sad that I was able to win with a 6/10 - it's a terrible result! And yes, I would consider a 15/31 to be bad enough to justify a DNF.

What about 1/2 then? I feel a 15/31 should be better than that at least

What do you think the rule should be then? I feel that if you define the rule too much you're kind of over complicating it, but this isn't really my area to be talking about :p

I like the rule very much the way it is. I admit 1/2 is kind of weak, but hopefully we'll rarely ever have a winner at a competition who's 1/2.

Well you've solved a 5x5 then, so your first solve wont be a bld. But I still think it would be cool to have the first physical solve be bld. If you don't it, keep trying until you do.

You should try doing what Mike did with the 7x7, make your first 5x5 solve a BLD solve... did he actually succeed with that? I don't remember.

I did succeed in that on the 7x7x7. It was my second attempt. The first attempt had 23 pieces wrong when I finished. I solved all but 3 of those pieces, then applied the first few moves of the second scramble, then solved the last 3 pieces into the scramble. So that way it was never completely solved once I scrambled it the first time, up until my successful BLD solve.

Sorry for bumping such an ancient thread, but I have some nooby questions that don't deserve their own thread.

1. What is the best quality pyraminx? I've done some research, and found some mixed opinions. I've heard that Meffert's had great ones, but Erik Akkersdijk said that the ones on cube4you are cheaper and are just as good. Then I heard that an eBay store called "tropicalestore" sells good pyraminxes.

2. What is the best quality square-1? Again, mixed opinions. Some say DIY/mf8 is decent, others say the original is the best while others say the original is terrible.

1. Out of the Meffert's, c4y, and tropicalestore ones I have I tried, I prefer tropicalestore. I loved mine until it broke.

2. DIY/mf8. period. The original just doesn't have the tolerance. Besides, all the fast people I know of use MF8's

Ooh, I have one!

On a megaminx, if you scramble RU, after orienting the LL you can have both incorrectly permuted corners and edges, whereas on a 3x3, you only have incorrectly permuted edges?
This also means that megaminx LL can be 2 gen, right?

Technically, no. Try orienting edges 2-gen :p
