One of the middle layers in my AoSu is slightly catchy when turned slowly, and the other two are smooth, what's up with that? Is it supposed to be like that, and do I just break it in?

Make sure that A) all the pieces are still inside of it and B) that all of the center pieces are locked into the core correctly. A lot of people reported incomplete/incorrect assembly right out of the box. Then finally C) make sure the tensions are equal. Although I've never been good of that on big cubes. My Aosu took a lot of work (and shock oil) before it was finally reliable.

A check
B check (otherwise the outer layers wouldn't turn that well)
C also check

I guess it might just be the design. I'm just being picky even though it doesn't affect me during solves.

I get this issue too. Except that on mine, one layer has a slight clicky sound but it doesn't feel clicky.

I see - I'm guessing that there's some plastic residue on a centerpiece that's coming in contact with the core mechanism (the small bumps on the core that makes sure the core is aligned correctly with the pieces, I wonder what that's called). For the time being, I'm too lazy to take it apart to inspect the pieces, and I hope it goes away with solving.

You could call it the X cube alignment mechanism.

Will stickerless cubes be legal in competitions soon? I heard JRCuber (I think) briefly mention something about it, and I'm looking to get some new speedcubes soon.

I don't see that happening. That doesn't seem like a change that would me made. If they would have allowed stickerless cubes, they probably would have when they first started coming out. It is entirely possible, but I don't see a reason. Competitions have been happening fine without them, I see no reason to allow them.

I'm not sure what the Japanese style is, I assume it's the flick style?

If you're using that, do the first F move with your thumb and the second as( x U')

What would you do if you had to AUF after that? Should I just push with my index finger down vertically to do the F'?

What I actually do (I use right hand for OH) is (x y' U). Now the original U face is on L and I can ALF

EDIT: I don't use the tip of my index to do the U. I use the lower portion of my finger to do it.

I see what you mean, but I'll stay with my no rotations finger-trick, because I fumble way too much and waste a lot of time.
