What should I do to best clean out my F-II? I dropped it into sand and rocks so it broke apart and got a LOT of sand inside it and in the core/spring mechanism too. It turns like **** now and I need to get all the sand out.

Is there anything I should do other than completely disassemble and rinse everything off with water?

This is what I did when one of my cubes got dirty.

1. Disassembled the cube.
2. Let everything except the core soak in water for a couple hours, I'm not sure whether this had any effect.
3. I took the pieces out and cleaned them with a damp rag.
4. I carefully cleaned the core, making sure to not get much water in it. The springs will rust if you do.

How should i practice right before a comp?

There was a Cubecast episode on this. What you want to do is strictly solve. Over and over. Don't learn anything new, you'll mess it up. You want to be used to your cube, so don't switch at the last minute. Just do solves over and over like normal. Maybe, if you have trouble with nerves you can cube somewhere in public, but it's really not that much of an issue, no one is watching you. If you're doing BLD you may want to practice with a bit of noise in the background, people lower their voices during BLD, but you can still hear them.

Is there a reason why the A-V edges are slightly rectangular? Does it help with speed, corner cutting, etc.? I can't really think of a reason it would help with either, but obviously I don't know much about hardware.
