WD40 is one of the worst things you can put in a cube. It melts plastic. Us silicone spray such as CRC or Jigaloo. There are many other lubricants available.
And generally the screw and springs dont need to be lubed, it wont make a difference.
Noobish question, What exactly is the fixed buffer?
When I edge pair 4x4, I use 3-2-2-2-3, During the 2s, I always keep the FL piece unsolved and place edges in the FR slot, pairing with a U', and when I slice back (U) i make a second pair in the FR slot.
Is that buffering? and if so, I find it faster, to look for a specific edge than trying to look for multiple ones.
Modding could also include changing the shape in some way. Basically anything done to a cube after factory. Like on a car, if you add a body kit to it after you purchased the car, it is a modification.

yea, or silicon spray like CRC. I didn't realize that lubing the screws/springs could make a difference until i disassembled my A3f after like 5 months of use. There was so much cube dust n silicon residue on the core assembly. After completely cleaning everything (all screws/springs/washers/core/pieces) i sprayed one or two sprays of CRC into the screw/spring/washer assembly just before screwing it in to the core. Worked wonders. I'd recommend it.
