i want a 3x3 that is smooth, fast, and has good cutting and pop resistance.

I hear the guhong would be best, and if so, should I get the colored or stickered version?

i'd go with the QJ, but I've heard positive and negative responses from both. The QJ does seem to pop a bit though.

there's also a mod that reduces the clicky feeling that comes with skewbs by monkeydude1313.

I'm VERY tired of my Maru 4x4x4 getting core mis-alignments, so I'm wondering what cube I should get that does NOT have this problem. If possible, I'd prefer a good mix between resistance to pops and speed. I like my Maru in how it is relatively fast and hardly pops, but I don't like the core problems.

Help the N00b?

Okay, so I'm new to this. Let me tell you real quick how I got here:

Basically, I picked up my cube again (a generic, loose-as-hell, pop-riffic jobbie I got almost thirty years ago) after a long absence because my GF's son got one for Christmas and I wanted to reteach myself. In so doing I finally found a walkthrough for my hopelessly-scrambled Revenge, and in a supreme bout of irony, one of the middles from said Revenge broke not five minutes after I got it solved.

So, yeah, n00b. But I'm having fun.

So I've been surfing and reading and now I want to get a couple of new cubes that are more designed for performance than the ones I have: a 3x3x3 to replace this thing, and a 4x4x4 to replace the now-dead Revenge.

I would like:

  • Fast (easy to turn), so I can teach myself the finger-flick turns I've been seeing in the videos
  • Forgiving for someone who hasn't gotten their precision down quite yet (don't know if this means less lock-prone, less pop-prone, or both)
  • Decent corner-cutting, since that seems key for getting faster
  • Available from a US seller ('cuz I don't want to wait a month for a shipment from China at this point)
  • Fairly inexpensive ('cuz ultimately I'm dabbling here.)

Now, I'm probably asking for something that spits gold coins and farts rainbows, but I figure it's worth a shot. I've seen videos singing the praises of the Ghost Hand 2 which I can get in both 3x3x3 and 4x4x4 flavors from Cube Depot, and I'm leaning that way, but I'd appreciate the opinion of the hive mind here: would those fit the bill above, and if not, is there something better (but in the same price-range) that would?

Thanks for any help! I've been reading through forum threads (especially in this subforum) and it's been fascinating.

Well, I'm pretty new to cubing myself but I'll try to help:
The best 3x3 would be DaYan GuHong and the best 4x4 must be XCube (it's quite pricey so if you want to get a decent cube you can choose Dayan+MF8 or even cheaper Shengshou). Actually, just take a look at this video and decide for yourself http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2nePGgl67jc&feature=related

Okay, so I'm new to this. Let me tell you real quick how I got here: ...

40$ is still quite expensive.. But I already picked up Shengshou, it will be enough for such a noob as myself.

Well, I just lost my CII cubies + FII frame hybrid and I need a new cube. I liked that cube a lot but didn't like the popping. What it offered: decent corner cutting (I'm fairly accurate but a little insurance is nice), smooth (for example, FII's are rough to me), and great M slice movement (COLL + EPLL makes this necessary).

Right now I'm using a C4Y DIY that I used before. The only issue with it is the M slice movement (it locks like crazy). I've been trying an FI and I like it but it's not quite as good as I feel it could be. I don't like FII's. Also, can someone compare CI and CII for me? Only old ratings for the CI exist and I don't think one can make a valid comparison off of that.

elite is moded and broken in, it has 48point mod and is lubed, you can watch video on lubix cube site how he do that, GuHong is just GuHong (but still pretty amazing)

Not quite, the Lubix Guhong (aka 'Ultimate') has the edge mod (which makes it smoother) and is nicely lubes. The Elite has a lot more sanding on the inside which slowes it down but makes it more stable.

Hey guys. It's me.

I am looking into purchasing a 4x4 and a 3x3.

I have been totally out of the loop for a long time. I left when the GuHong was just being released.

I'm planning on getting a GuHong (Elite? Ultimate? Wut?) And an X-Cube.

Please give me recommendations on where to purchase, etc.

I already have a Mefferts megaminx. It turns amazing and I've had it for about a year. However, it's too small, makes my hands sweaty and I don't like the feel of their tiles. What's the best or second best megaminx? What megaminx do Simon and Balint use? I use to have an MF8 tiled megaminx, and it's pretty old and I got it at a time where I sucked at diy adjusting/working with. I'm not sure if I have the MF8 I or II. Is II the black one in this thread http://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showthread.php?15304-%BFRetooled-black-MF8-Megaminx-(pictures)?
