Honestly? Love the site, but I wouldn't recommend that megaminx. You can get a better one, for less at 51morefun.com atleast I got mine there, and it works great.

Don't get it. I got that one, and it's a really crappy chinaminx. Don't get the square-1 from that site either, it's also cheap and horrible. Of course, the site itself is great, I buy from it all the time, but it's not a very good place to buy cubes. If you want a megaminx, get a QJ of a MF8 VII for almost the same price; they're a million times better.

They're just buying some kind of Megaminx from someone else and reselling it - I'm not sure what type this one is, but you would probably get a better price at one of the large Chinese wholesalers anyway. If you're interested enough in Megaminxes that you care about the type, you'd be wasting your time if you didn't shop at a place with many types to choose from.

No, I appreciate it. It sounds like the consensus is that I can do better for the same money elsewhere and so I need to search for other items to pad my order. :)

First off, I'd like to say hi as I just registered. :) I'm brand new to cubing. I got interested in cubing at a math competition where I saw a person solve a Rubik's cube in about...40 seconds? I just found it amazing and thought it would be neat to try this. So, I'm looking for my first cube, hopefully something that doesn't pop a lot, lock up, and is smooth. Maybe corner cutting would be good down the road so I don't have to buy another cube later. A future-proof cube would be nice. Thanks!

Best regards,
the new guy

Hi first of all have fun with cubing!
i would go out and buy a Rubik's brand but if you really want to get something good i would buy from an online store (speed cubeshop, speed solving shop, cube depot or i cube mart) and get a guhong V2

I feel like you're gonna regret your username when you are no longer a noob.
So, you say you have no cube, and want to get a speed cube?
Wow. What an informed newbie. I wish I knew of speedcubes when I started.
anyway, like cubecraze1 said, guhong 1s and 2s are great, 2s tend to pop less (apparently).
but really, all dayan cubes are great (maybe not taiyan (the first one) or lunhui (4th one))
currently people love guhongs and zhanchis, some like lingyuns as well.
I'm not sure which is better for newbies, but probably guhong, as it might be slightly slower than zhanchi.
Happy cubing, and welcome to the forums!

Heck, I still feel like a newbie. :)

Really, just starting out, get a Dayan GuHong, I think. Something basic, pretty cheap, fits all of the criteria you specify, and it will give you a feel for what you can do with a really good cube, and something to practice tensioning and lubricating and such. I don't have a ZhanChi yet (but I want one), but the vibe I get from that one is that it might be for slightly more advanced hands. So I'd say start simple and then you will get a feel for what you really want.

Welcome!

I would recommend getting a Dayan ZhanChi and tighening the tensions; and then when you get to around 30-40 seconds, loosen the tensions a little and putting a little lube in it.

Good luck cubing!

Shud i get a yj or lanlan 7x7? Or wait for a shengshou. Vcubes too expensive.

I would personally wait until the WCA says whether they will make pillowed 7x7 cubes illegal due to the cubic Shengshou coming out. If they don't, then I have no idea about 7x7's as I don't solve them.

Haha. Thanks. I did a bit of research for a couple of hours yesterday. I did read the wikis here and I was settled on going to a DaYan cube. I'm aware of the rather sluggish Lunhui and Taiyan (the english name should be sun if I guessed correctly). I considered the Zhanchi, Guhong, Guhong V2, and possibly the Lingyun cubes (I and II).

Heck, I still feel like a newbie. :)

Welcome!

Thanks for the warm welcome. I think I'll be able to manage. I guess I'll just only rotate one side at a time and I should be able to do that. I'm pretty sure it isn't going to go spinning out of control when I try turning it but it wouldn't hurt to have something easier to work with first.

Advice heeded.

Thanks for the warm welcome everybody! I did find two cubes of interest on Amazon. They're the stickerless guhong and zhanchi. Should I get one of each and see which one I like? I can always return one. btw, these are all stickerless.

Lunhui http://www.amazon.com/Dayan-LunHui-...AF5PT64N3THLG&s=generic&qid=1331990819&sr=1-6

Guhong I http://www.amazon.com/Dayan-GuHong-...AF5PT64N3THLG&s=generic&qid=1331990819&sr=1-1

Lingyun 2 http://www.amazon.com/Dayan-Lingyun...F5PT64N3THLG&s=generic&qid=1331990819&sr=1-21

Zhanchi http://www.amazon.com/Dayan-ZhanChi...AF5PT64N3THLG&s=generic&qid=1331990819&sr=1-2

I would recommend that you DON'T get a stickerless because they are illegal in competitions. I think this is because when you turn a layer 45 degrees, you can see the colour, but not the sticker. I'm sure someone else can explain this better than me.

I'm not going to be competing in any competitions so...
