Hi, I'm pretty new to speedcubing (https://www.speedsolving.com/forum/showthread.php?55571-Looking-to-reduce-my-times) and ATM I'm using a regular Rubik's brand cube with 1:30 average. Obviously i need a speedcube, but I'm not quite sure which to get. I had my sights set on a YuXin, but now I'm hearing good reviews on several MoYu cubes. Which is better? I would prefer a controllable cube with good corner cutting, but that is also fast... This is why i wanted a YuXin... any help is appreciated

well you dont 'obviously' need one. just sayin u can sub 1 on a rubiks brand

Pretty sure you can sub-20 a rubiks brand

Long time since I last tried and my Rubik's brand has 0º corner cutting either forward or reverse, well, maybe 5º forward / 0º reverse and the best I could do was a 24.xx sec solve but somebody in the forum with a better lubed Rubik's brand and also faster than me got 17.xx and times like that so definitely possible but why would anyone want to suffer solving a rubik's brand when there are tons of cheap and great speedcubes to choose from?

With an out of the box Rubik's cube (not speed cube) I can get 18second solves (I usually average 15-16). With the Rubik's speed cube I'd average around 17secs. You would use a Rubik's cube if you already have one, or got one as a present. It's not worth it though if you have the money to buy a proper speed cube

I'm just saying it's possible. It's also good to do to prevent yourself turning too fast so you have to maintain efficiency.

Yes, I completely agree with you. It is possible, and maybe even a useful practice now and then for accuracy, etc. but I would not recommend to use it as a daily practice speedcube, that's all. I think I will try to do an Ao12 at least this weekend with it to see if I can beat that 24.xx :)

it is definitely possible. i just wanted to state that is isnt really needed to have a speedcube to get better times esp since he isnt even under a min. No offence to him but because he averages 1.30 i dont really think a speedcube will help him that much. just sayin.

Yep, it won't help his times much, I fully agree but if he's going to keep on practising and improving then he will likely want to buy a nice speedcube anyway so, why wait? Also when cost is most probably not a very important part of the equation, as there are good speedcubes for $2 or $4.

yeah he's probabaly gonna get better but for now if i were him i would stick to the rubiks brand because when i was 1.30 speedcubes just didnt feel right esp with the turning style i had.(grip the whole face)

This is exactly why you should use a speedcube from the get go. If you are to use a Rubik's brand for too long, you will develop a turning style that primarily uses the wrist, instead of using fingers. Just watch any 80's speedcuber for example Minh Thai. There is no point in using a Rubik's cube unless you can't get access to anything else.

Not all Rubik's cubes are that bad. Some turn pretty well. But yeah just get a speed cube.

a rubiks cube will never pop or corner twist atleast

I have one and it actually turns pretty fast but it's super loud and does not corner cut good at all, I got it for one dollar at a swap meet looool it came unsolved in a box

well some rubiks brands are actually really good and there is no problem fingertricking them so it should prolly be just fine

i've noticed some controversy regarding my statement about needing a speedcube. Just to clear things up, my cube has 0 degree corner cutting, plus it is unlubed, sat in a deep dark basement (not really) for 2 years, and is impossible to fingertrick on... And as mentioned by Phinigan, with the circumstance my cube is in, i have to turn very roughly and with my wrist, which when i do get a speedcube, could cause problems.
P.S. Do to price issues, i think for now i am going to order a YuXin with Maru CX3 soft springs for when i need it to be faster. Thanks for the advice guys, but i'm afraid good cubes aren't free ;) (later on a TangLong seems like a good choice). Sorry, i kind of got carried away, it happens to the best of us, (and the worst of us ;)).

Hi, I am looking to buy a new 3x3 cube. Right now I have the Gans 356 in which I sorta like in the way it is fast and smooth, but it is way to unstable for my liking. I average around 15 seconds and I've heard that the Tanglong is just a more stable version of the Gans 356, but I've also heard it's slower. So my question is what type of cube feels like the Gans 356, is more stable, and still maintains the same speed?

no hard feelings man its all good. also IMO if ur gonna get a yuxin with CX3 soft spring, might as well get a thunderclap.
