i am a dinosaur from the time when zhanchis were the best cube out there and not recommended for beginners.
can someone update me on the difference between the weilong and aolong?

im guessing v1 v2 has virtually no difference if i've never tried the other one, but all i know is it's good and there are corner twists.

I apologize in advance if this question has been answered.

I started cubing in 2007 and it was my main hobby up until a couple of years ago. I'm not the best, but I'm not the worst. I averaged ~25 seconds. So my question is, since I've been out of the loop, what would be a good 3x3x3 for me to get back into things and, perhaps, better my times?

Aolong v2 is the big one nowadays

I just got a Zhanchi and its now my backup main, but to answer your question,
Weilong is faster, but is not so good at corner cutting and tends to lock up if your turning style is rough. It is also blocky.
The Aolong is a tad bit slower, which makes it more controllable and is the best at corner cutting. The feeling is smooth but dry out of the box.

@ tyleryarnelli

There are so many 3x3s these days that are good so here are some options
if you want super smooth i hear the Weilong and Aolong are a good choice
If you want control get a Zhanchi.
if you want smooth with a frosty feel get the Shuangren v2
if you want really crispy and loud get a CX3
or if you want an inexpensive cube get a Yulong or Guanlong

Which 7x7 should i get? Moyu Aofu or Shengshou Mini 7x7
I've never tried a pillowed 7x7 so I dont know whether i prefer it or not.

The Aofu is a great cube and if it weren't pillowed a lot of people would use it as their mains, but they're too used to cubic.

If you start out with a pillowed cube than it shouldn't be very hard to get used to, it took me about three solves before I didn't feel a difference.

As for the SS Mini, I have one and although it's a great cube the Aofu is better.

DaYan Zhanchi or DaYan GuHong or DaYan GuHong v2?
Don't ask me to get a MoYu, I currently don't have any regular sized DaYan cube and want one, because I like my mini so much it almost became my main.

Cube choices

I am buying a few 3x3's. I am a roux user, which requires a lot of M slice moves. I am going for a Guanlong plus something else.

Choose:
1. Guhong
2. Weilong
3. Huanying

Please stop spreading this false advice.

Yeah, I agree with you. I started with a Dayan Zanchi when I was not even sub 1-minute. When barely sub-40 I bought several other cubes, Moyu Weilong, Sulong, Chilong... Now I'm barely sub-23 with between 10% to 20% sub-20 solves. My progress is now very slow but I think this has more to do with my age (44) than with the cubes I've been using. In fact I find it useful to change cubes once in a while to not get too used to my main (Chilong). For example, I like to change to the HuanYing which needs a bit more accurate turning (because it is very squarey and because I have it in somewhat tight tensions) and at times change to an Aolong which allows a bit more "sloppy" turning (but as I get less careful I get corner twists). Then I go back to my Chilong which is somewhere in the middle. I also like the Weilong a lot for the same reason, it is an in-betweener. I just like the Chilong better because I have it set up with my custom stickers and lubed core.

In summary, get a good cube or two, enjoy practicing and forget about anything else, that's what I'd recommend to any newcomer.

I'd definitely agree with this.

My first speed cubes were a Dayan Zhanchi in stickerless and in black stickered and a Moyu Aulong. I'm averaging around 90 secs now and the MoYu is a *really* nice cube. It's between that and the stickerless which I prefer.

the Weilongs are a waste of money in my opinion. if you are going to spend some money go for the Aolong v1 or v2
the v1 is faster but pops and has corner twist every once in a while while the v2 is a bit slower but much better for the issues

NOTE: the Aolong v1 vas discontinued and if you really want one you can find them on ebay but they are NOT cheap.

I started with the Zhan Chi and think it is a great cube for a beginner. I switched to a Weilong last year and absolutely LOVE it. I've tried the Aolongd (1&2), but didn't find them better enough to spend the $$, as I already had the Weilong.

Good to see some other older cuber out there. I call us Founders, those born before the cube was invented. Yes, I'm that old!!!! (Unofficial PB 14.1, but average around 23.)

wtf weilong is one of the best cubes. What are you even talking about?

Agreed. The WeiLong is a great cube that feels like a cube. The AoLong is too bubbly for my tastes.

Fully agree with that. The Weilong is great. I also prefer it to the Aolong because of the same reasons (too bubbly for me) but that's just a matter of taste but I wouldn't say the Weilong is worse than the Aolong, just different. The only reason I am using a Chilong as main instead of my Weilong is that I put custom stickers on it and can find the pieces a tad faster because of that... but I have another set of stickers waiting for the Weilong, hehehe.

Edit: You can check the stickers in my avatar :D
