I want a 4x4 and a 5x5 cube, with minimal lock ups, corner cutting and a general good cube. I also don't want to spend too much time moadding/breaking in my cube. Suggestions?

You want minimal corner cutting? JK I know you want something that cuts well

Shengshou 4x4 is a very very good cube but it can catch far too often on middle slices. There are mods that make it (usually) middle slice well and turn it into the loosy goosy corner cutting 4x4 version of the GuHong but you don't want to spend time on it and the mods take time. Maybe ask to buy a modded one from someone but a modded one is state of the art for a 4x4.

Also there is a new 4x4 v-cube coming out it looks very very good. If you want it good out of the box this might be your cube.

Shengshou 5x5 is good out of the box.

I'm a Guhong guy but I'm starting to see where faster turning and less crazy play might be a good thing to have..

So my question Zhanchi or Black square V-cube 3x3?

If I want to try a v-cube are there truly no north american distributors I can buy a black square one from?

I think you should either stay with the guhong, or buy a zhanchi. Both are great cubes.

Hello, I'm a complete newbie at cubing, but I simply love it and want to purchase decent speedcubes, so I can practice my speedsolving, because at the moment I'm horrible at it, one of the problems here is my cube.

So lets get this started. All the cubes I've got are from the rubik's brand (since these are the only ones sold in stores nearby and they were gifts). I know, they're not that great at all, I lubricated them, modded them as much as I dared (sanding it and stuff like that).

What I've got so far is 3x3x3, 4x4x4, 2x2x4 (rubiks tower) and then 2 puzzles, the rubiks magic and the rubiks 360 (hate that thing).

Anyway, I'm interested in buying new cubes, probably 2x2x2, 3x3x3, 4x4x4 and 5x5x5, or others. Will most likely order them on lighttake, free shipping and low cost as far as I know. Any suggestions on what models are good for a starting cuber?

I found this value pack consisting of several cubes : http://www.3x3x3cube.com/super-value-2x2-3x3-4x4-5x5-typeb-magic-speed-cube-pack_p621.html
The price seems really low, so I think this is just rubbish, but if anyone can tell me differently, then I'll give it a shot.

@HaraK1ri I don't think that they are good, I order my cubes on icubemart.com, the have fast shipping and the sell better cubes, then what you saw, but also the same on LighTake, but by my first order I wait for 3 months. The next 4x4 I order is a Sengshou and a 5x5 too. The good 2x2 are Wit-Two and V-Cube, the fast speedcubers use Wit-Two, I V-Cube, but I'm not good in 2x2. V-Cubes are also really good for 4x4 and 5x5 cubes and bigger, but the last time speedcubers use more Sengshou (but it is also what you like) the V-Cube. And 3x3 I use a Dayan ZanChi, Dayan cubes are really fast and one of the best cubes there are, but the are really fast and maybe to fast for you if you are not accustomed (? Don't know the good word used Google Translate) on fast cubes.

Thanks for the information. Also, than you for the link, it's nice, but I'm going to look around a bit for alternatives, the shipping is quite pricey compared to the price for the cubes.

Other suggestions are still welcome :)

A regular Dayan will do to start out with. I have both, and I find the Dayan running better, more smoothly, than the Shengshou. If I were to put them in a row best first and then to worse: Dayan - mf8 v2 - Shengshou.

And the Dayan merely wins here because of the ridges.

I have to choose one to trade for, so which one of the two (mf8 or QJ) should I choose?

Are they both v1? Of both of mf8's versions I'm sure v2 is better (haven't tried v1), and QJ v2 is better than v1 for sure. QJ v2 is best of all 4 probably. Here is the order:
1. QJ v2
2. Mf8 v2
3. QJ v1 or MF8 v1 ????
If there is a they're both v1, can't help you there.

Maru 4x4 v2

Does anyone have the Maru 4x4x4 version 2 and if so what is the consensus on it? I'm a teacher looking to purchase cubes to,use in my classroom, including 4x4's. I currently have the mf8-Dayan 4x4 as my personal 4x4 and the pops are starting to get ridiculous. I am going to purchase the ShengShou v4 4x4, but is the Maru worth getting (like is it better than ShengShou)? My problem is that I need to make a decision soon and I can't find any good info or reviews on the Maru? Any help is appreciated.

ShengShou is better, really. Most speedcubers use it. The fact that it has more reviews (most of them positive) means it's more popular than Maru.

For instructional purposes, anything is fine, but for speedcubing, ShengShou is the way to go.

Thanks for the reply. I may get the Maru just for me to play with to see which one I like better. They should both be better than my current one!

A modified dayan. they are really smooth and fast. If i am warmed up I can get around 1:10 with one.

Thanks Ben, but I think I'll go for an unmodified Dayan to start out with. Thanks for the feedback anyway! :D

I think I'll get a regular black Dayan with corner ridges. Thanks for everything guys! I really appreciate it! :D

Just curious, what makes you place mf8 v2 before ShengShou?
