I haven't tried it but you could always do the 48 point edge mod on the Zhanchi. I don't need to do it on mine because it's been solved so many times it's completely smooth (smoother than my guhong).

Normally I'd research this on my own, but I'm leaving right away until after new years so I just don't have the time. I noticed Lightake is having a sale on a lot of cubes. Can anyone recommend a 4x4x4 and a 5x5x5 for me? I just need something that turns relatively smoothly and doesn't pop much. I won't really be going for speed solves on them, I just want something decent and basic to get started with.

Shengshou for both (there are different versions of the 4x4, the v3 is the best). They're both really good and cheap cubes; you can probably get them on lightake for under 10$ each even without the sale.

Take of the tips and tension the screws all the way. The QJ was used to break the WR avg so it definitley has some potential.

Personally, I love the MF8v2. I haven't tried the Meffert's though. The QJ's decent imo, but I still like the MF8

Mf8 v2. It's better than the QJ (in my opinion), and even if the mefferts is a little better, it's not worth the extra $20-30 that it costs.

V-Cube 2 is generally not recommended over the other two options.
LanLan is extremely good , and cheap too. I believe it was the most popular 2x2 before the WitTwo came out.
WitTwo is normally considered the "best" but it's a bit more expensive than the LanLan.
So : LanLan unless you're willing to spend a little extra cash.

This. Most people I know are using the WitTwo because it's the best. I use a LanLan because I'm poor.

I don't know anything about Megaminxes, but when I asked what Pyraminx I should get a couple weeks back, nearly everyone said a QJ so I'd probably just stick with yours. Maybe I should actually get around to getting one...
