does adding torpedoes to a guhong make it basically a zhanchi? and is there a place to get only torpedoes for less than 7.99?

No, adding torpedoes to the Guhong doesn't make it a Zhanchi (it's still not going to be as fast, and it's not like the Guhong pops that much to begin with). As far as I know, there is no other place to buy the lone torpedo-pieces.

I want to buy a mefferts 4x4? Are they still one of the best 4x4's out there

Naww. Get a MF8 + Dayan. Even though they medium priced, they are very sturdy and very smooth with awesome corner cutting. Like one cubie on outside and inside awesome. The outer layers feel like a 3x3 and inner a 2x2. Overall great cube for the buck.

I currently have a storebought and a Ghost Hand II. I don't mind the storebought for casual cubing though obviously it's not a great speedcube. I really like my Ghost Hand II but it locks up on me a bit more than I'd prefer.

I'd like to get a DIY because I think it'd be fun to actually put a cube together, so I'm looking for a good speedcube that locks up a bit less than the GHII, but is in the same weight class. I've seen the GHII listed around 75g, and it looks like stuff like the C4U DIY is 100g+, which I think might be too heavy for my tastes. Thoughts?

Get the Dayan 1 cube. Very fast, cuts corners about 40 degrees, and doesn't lock up. Plus its about the same weight as a GuHong or maybe your storebought.
