Off-Topic: When I read the title I thought of Rebecca Black "Which seat should I take?"

On-Topic: Arguing about which cube is the "best" does nothing, each person has his/her own personal preference. Just because someone broke the WR with a cube doesn't make it the best. Hypothetically, Feliks just used the the ZhanChi because he was advertising for the company which made it, not because it's the best. Who knows. The best we can do is try them out, find which one suits our style, and go with it.

I know multiple people who prefer the C4Y DIY over the GuHong and other "best" 3x3x3s.

What are good beginner 2x2, 4x4, and 5x5 cubes?

2x2: You don't really need a "beginner" 2x2. Just go with LL or V-Cube 2.
4x4: See above. Just go with a Dayan+MF8 4x4, or, if you have the money, an X-Cube 4.
5x5: See above. Get a Shengshou or V-Cube 5.

I used to be a pretty serious speedcuber, 5 or 6 years ago, averaging 18 or 19 seconds...I only ever used a Rubiks Brand cube though. Just got back into cubing, and currently averaging about 23 seconds, again with a store-bought Rubiks brand cube.
What would be a good cube for someone with times like mine, looking to get back into sub-20 range and maybe faster?
reading through the forums it seems to me like the best would be the GuHong, Haiyan Memory, ZhanChi, and maybe Alpha 5...anyone out there with advice or other recommendations?
I might get two or three new cubes, different kinds, just to test out my options.

Thanks!!

The Zhanchi is pretty awesome, you can't go wrong with it.

I personally think it's the exact same, but slower, really. I like the Gu Hong much better.

Slower without the anchors? that's disappointing seeing how guhong is 'slow' compared to its sibling lingyun...
