so im looking to get some puzzles for xmas and i was looking for some ideas...
I already have 2x2-7x7 a pyra sq1 3x3x4...
I was thinking about the dayan megaminx (with corner edge things)
the 3x4x5 tomz puzzle and possibly the 4x4x6?
The curvy copter?

im trying to find some unique puzzles (from the standard rubiks cube) but still ones that are mass produced and known to be of good quality. can anyone else recommend a puzzle they would consider unique and still a challenge? (maybe if i want a real challenge i should try the latch cube!)
i dont know if gear puzzles appeal to me unless someone can vouch for them otherwise.
also with the puzzle names could you recommend a place to buy it too? (it will save me looking a bunch of sites just to try to find each puzzle and realize they're all from separate sites)

I need some help deciding on what speedcube I should purchase. Last cube I got was about 5 years ago on ebay and it was some DIY cube, I have no idea what brand. I currently average low 40s but I would like to get a good cube that will sustain me into the 20 second range if I should get there. What are the "good" cubes to get these days? I've seen some good reviews for the Alpha V and Alpha V-f on youtube, but that cube came out over two years ago. I have also been hearing dayuns are pretty good. Any recommendations?

Edit: 3x3 cube :P

Dayans are good.
Guhong, Zhanchi, Guhong version 2. Some people like lingyun (version 1 or 2).
I personally prefer zhanchi because I like faster cubes.
However, the other Dayan cubes are all really fast as well.
If you can, you should buy both the guhong v2 and the zhanchi and see which one you like.

Good luck!

Thanks for the response! Could you elaborate a little bit on the differences between the versions you mentioned?

I am no expert, but here goes:
Guhong v1: smooth, fast, no torpedoes
Guhong v2: smooth, not quite as fast, torpedoes
Zhanchi: more crispy, insanely fast, torpedoes
As for the lingyuns, I don't really know much about them, so someone else can provide that info.

Whichever one you choose, you'll probably love it. They all have great performance, just slightly different feels.

Do the cubes come with torpedoes? I noticed on speedcubeshop that you can order torpedoes separately... Also how much of an impact to torpedoes make?

The cubes that I mentioned as having torpedoes do come with torpedoes.
People may buy torpedoes separately if their cube does not have torpedoes.
Torpedoes are supposed to prevent popping, which in my opinion they do. BUT, when pops do happen, which is occasionally, it's more like an explosion because the torpedoes don't let only the edges come out; the corners and other pieces around it get pulled out as well.
As for speed, I believe that torpedoes may make the cube slightly less smooth (maybe wrong), but overall don't affect the performance in terms of turning.

I don't have a (modern) 2x2, 4x4, 6x6 or Pyraminx. This is what I'll order unless you guys convince me otherwise:

2x2: Type C WitTwo II
4x4: Sheng shou V4
6x6: Sheng shou
Pyraminx: Sheng shou

Thanks for the advice.

I don't know if you already ordered them, but i am pretty sure the Type C WitTwo v II is a bad choice. Get the v1.

The descriptions there are pretty accurate.
Lingyun v2- Very nice and crispy feel. Definitely crispier than a zhanchi. The speed is also on par with the zhanchis, and there are torpedos included.
I don't have the lingyun v1, but it does not come with torpedos, and that is all I know. One major tip though: YOU MUST HAVE LUBE IF YOU WANT A DAYAN CUBE. Lubix or any kind of differential oil(traxxas is recommended) works best. I ordered a lubix zhanchi and a pre lubed guhong v2 when I got into Dayans. When I bought the lingyun v2, I didn't buy a pre lubed one and thought it will be fine. I WAS WRONG! The cube was absolutely horrible, I thought it was the worst choice I made. However, I put some lubix in it, and it is now my main over my zhanchi! So buy some lube.

I have two quick questions. One, is lubix superior to traxxas? It seems to be far more expensive... So what are the differences? Also this may be a stupid question but when you said you got a lubix zhanchi what is the difference between that and a dayan zhanchi that I can get off speedcubeshop?

i haven't noticed a palpable difference between the two besides price and based on who you ask, there is no difference besides brand name, both are silicone lubricants.

a lubix zhanchi has been pre-modded and rounded off in certain places to make it smoother, a dayan is just stock without any mods done to it.

Many people swear by their lubix zhanchis, but many people say that just doing it yourself isn't all that hard.
Buy some high viscosity silicone, lube the core, do the 48 point edge mod (not a big deal on zhanchis).
Also, you can post lubrication questions in the Lubrication Thread.

You need to give a price that you consider cheap. I consider GuHong/Zhanchi to be pretty cheap as it is.

Dont want to get zhanchis cuz these are all beginners im getting cubes for. Also, don't wanna spend over $5 per cube...
