Which cube do you use?

As Aaron said, the Zhanchi is still a great cube. I still use mine some times. As for current favorite cubes I'd say the ones most used by top cubers right now are (in no particular order): Gans 356, QiYi Thunderclap, Moyu Tanglong, Moyu Aolong v2, Cong's Meiying. The new GuoGuan YueXiao looks like it will be many people's main pretty soon as well. From all these, the cheapest by far is the QiYi.

Dude... I said in terms of performance. All that was discussed was about breaking it in.

Hi all, I have been using guanlong for 3 months now and I now average around 24~ and PB is 17.81. I like fast, smooth, crunchy cubes that have great corner cutting and does not pop. What's the best cube for me?

I got it today and its HEAVENLY compared to my original rubik's brand 2.0 :p. And it corner cuts very well too, more than 45 degrees.

Yeah, compared to that almost any speedcube is otherworldly :) It's more or less the same reaction I had when I changed from a Rubki's to a stickerless Zhanchi almost 3 years ago, when I started speedcubing. Hope you enjoy it. I have compulsively bought like another 15 3x3s since then but there's no need of that if you are happy with it, you can still get sub-6 times with it (well, at least Feliks can :p)

:p I absolutely love it and it fulfills all my expectations and requirements

Sounds like you're looking for something along the lines of a Yuxin 3x3, Thunderclap, or AoLong V2.

The AoLong might be the crunchiest smooth turning cube out there, so if feel is what you're after, go that route. IMO the only downside to the AoLong is it seems impossible to make it both fast and stable. The Yuxin is extremely fast, kinda scratchy at first but smooths out after break in, not quite as heavy as the AoLong. I've never used a Thunderclap but from all I've read and seen it seems to be somewhere in between those two, like a lighter AoLong.

Just for reference I consider the GuanLong to be a light and slightly scratchy cube, so any of the above would be quite a change from your GuanLong.

That's exactly how I felt when I first got it. I was previously using a non branded cube and it was terrible. When I got the Zhanchi, I was absolutely blown away. Anyway, hope you enjoy it!!

ok, thanks. I guess i'll get the qiyi skewb as it is only a dollar more expensive and the moyu pyraminx as im just a beginner. Also, when your cb pyra arrives, let me know if it's good or not because i may want to get a pyra for a friend and its price looks tempting.

Hi Aaron. My Cyclone Boys pyraminx just arrived and... well, let's just say it's not what I expected from CB after their recent, very nice cubes like the 5x5 and 4x4 G4.

I think it's barely better than the ShengShou I already had. It locks up a little bit less but I think it's nowhere near Moyu and QiYi. I think I'm going to give it as a gift and immediately buy a Moyu or QiYi... or both? :) A recent first impressions video by a Spanish colleage that also roams this forum (APdRF) seems to corroborate this. It is cheap, though, and maybe for a beginner it could be decent enough but I am not gonna stick with it for speedsolving having much better alternatives at an affordable price. It all depends on how much you want to spend and how close that friend of yours is ;)

Hope this helped you make your mind.

Hey, quick question, is the guoguan yuexiao better or thunderclap? Price does not really matter, just performance. I avg about 14.7 and use a meiying

If you like the Meiying I would say: go for the YueXiao, as it looks like an improvement on the Meiying.

Also, as an alternative to the Thunderclap there is the new X-Man Design Tornado, which seems to be also amazing, based on some first impressions video I watched yesterday and is, in the same fashion as Cong's Design & Guoguan spin-offs from Moyu, a spin-off from QiYi, so a natural evolution of the Thunderclap, I'd say.

Both the YueXiao and Tornado seem to have the best corner cutting on the market right now with barely a zone where they would not cut at all so, if you go too far away, in the line-to-line zone, they almost instantly go from direct cutting to reverse cutting. Not sure if that is good or bad... probably a source of messed up algs?

I have both and, no the TueXiao is not an improved MeiYing. They both can cut the same. The YueXiao is a few grams heavier and much more contact between pieces. If you want the pieces to have a lot of contact with each other then yes but if you liked the airiness of the MeiYing than you might not like it.

Personally I think the Thunderclap is an overall nicer cube than the YueXiao for my personal preference.

If somebody starts messing up algs because there's too much corner cutting, then he or she has to figure out how to turn more accurately, haha.

Coolio

Hi, I've been cubing for 2 weeks now, my average time is around 2'30 (beginner's method), so cubes don't really make a big difference at this stage. However, I've got a Thunderclap, a Yulong and a Guanlong (best times are 1'56 with a Thunderclap, 1'58 with the Yulong), all stickerless.

On one hand the Thunderclap is slightly too loose for me, I'm not experienced enough to fully exploit its potential, and the Guanlong is too light, I just use it as a back up cube or for cubing while commuting, it's expendable. On the other hand I really enjoy the Yulong, the feeling, the noise and the weight (slightly heavier than the Thunderclap). Although it's probably a middle range cube, it's clearly my favorite.

So based from my observations, what would be the right cube to upgrade from the Yulong? (stickerless or white/primary/original colour)

If you want a heavier, more stable cube the Tanglong is a great choice.
