Well, Peter Sebesteny invented the original one. Rubik's did redesign their cube at least once, but that problem is that they've never really been too concerned with making cubes that turn well - they care more about cubes that are sturdy and won't need to be replaced often. Speedcube companies (Moyu, Maru, Dayan, etc.) produce 4x4x4s and other puzzles that they think will turn well, which is why those are much better for speedsolving.
you can have tiled cubes. e.g. if you've seen the rubik's speed cube, you see that's tiled. that's allowed. stickerless cubes aren't though, as when you midturn a cube, you can see the other colours at the back without rotating the cube, giving yourself an advantage.
rubik's 4x4 kinda sucks tho. if you're on a budget, shengshou is quite good but moyu aosu is the beast.
One thing that has helped me to get some of my cubes to feel as you described is by doing the cotton mod. What that is is simply separating the pieces, and inserting cotton balls inside them and reassembling the pieces. Not very difficult to do, but it helps t give the cube a bit more weight, and feels more blocky. IMO it allows the cube to be more snappy. I tried this mod on my yulong by putting cotton in edges, but not corners. You can play around with how much cotton, and where to put it, but I would recommend to put it in all of the edges first.
Thanks. So is skweb so much fun really? Does it need many new algs to solve? Also, in case I get one, which one do you recommend? Moyu?
Regarding the Fisher I get you mean the Crazy Yileng 3x3?
Skewb technically only needs one alg to solve (Sarah's beginners). Even then, all the "algs" in Intermediate and Advanced are just combinations of sledgehammers, hedgeslammers and rotations, though I doubt you would want to learn advanced if it is just for fun. And get the Moyu (though some people will say that Shengshou is better, I disagree)
And the Crazy Yileng is not the Fisher Cube. That being said though, I can't seem to find any Fisher cubes besides mefferts. And anyway, the Crazy Yileng is very similar so it is probably just as fun. (I don't have either of them so this is just my opinion)
Didn't want to start a new thread, so just asking here.. Could anyone tell me how the QiYi Thunderclap is compared to the Bullfight. I really like the Bullfight except its locking issues. So my question is: Are the locking/catching issues fixed on the Thunderclap but still very stable and quite fast?
