So I'm getting back into cubing after having stopped for 4 years and I've decided to buy a bunch of cubes to get started.
I'm not totally up to date as to what is good these days but after a little research this is what I've decided on. Opinions?

Ultimate Zhanchi 2x2
Lubix Fusion
Ultimate Zhanchi 3x3
MoYu WeiLong
Shengshu 4x4 and 5x5

btw right now I'm averaging 16 for 3x3, not sure about the bigger cubes though

I would highly suggest to not get Lubix cubes as a first cube. While they provide a nice feel and are certainly nice cubes, the price that they have isn't worth the price, in my opinion.

The top 3x3s on the market are the WeiLong(from what I've heard, it's an amazing cube), the Fangshi Shuang Ren(which is scratchy and clicky, but hard to pop and feels nice to me), the Dayan Zhanchi(which is crispy and wicked fast), and the Guhong version 2, which is a bit slower and smoother.

Shengshou produces the best big cubes, from 4x4 to 9x9.

Thanks for the reply, so are you saying avoid Lubix solely because of the price or is there another reason? Just wondering because I'm terrible at modding in general so the extra couple dollars would probably be worth it for me.

They're expensive. I've felt many of their cubes, and for most I can definitely say that the quality of the cube was not worth the price.

(these are my opinions, others will (dis)agree with me)

IMO they don't need modding at all. The cubes are all really good after some lubing and breaking in. I would just get the cubes and lube with differential oil (30k-50k range) and break the cubes in. Lubix is expensive and if you want a really good main, maybe get it but it's still overpriced IMO.

All cubes right now are really fast and good compared to 4 years ago. I don't know what you had as your main 4 years ago but the WeiLong feels exactly like a slightly smoother and faster Alpha 5 and the guhong v2 is like a faster smoother guhong v1 (pretty sure they were out by then).

Lubix cubes are great but you don't need to cash that much out. Just buy a cube DIY and get it to your own preferences, and possibly do your own mmods, then lube it.
If you try to mod a prelubed cube then you get plastic bits stuck to lube and you take off all the lube anyway.

(PS I love the CPM on the Zhanchi, Lubix doesn't do that.)

FWIW, I've seen a pretty comprehensive consensus on the value of buying pre-modded cubes in my time on the forums.

48 point edge mod can be done using a nail file/sandpaper in less than an hour, even if you're a noob like me. I've done 3 cubes, and it's not like the more adventurous 4x4 mods that can ruin your cube, it's pretty foolproof. If you have a dremel, maybe half that time, but I'm not that lucky. Most of the time is taken up splitting edges to remove torpedos so I can file round them, in my experience!!!

My current main is a 55mm Zhanchi from UkCubeStore. It's 48pem'd, which isn't probably necessary on the Zhanchi, but does make it slightly smoother and quieter. I've rounded-off all sharp edges and hard lines on all the pieces. In all, it probably took about 3 hours, and has made negligible difference to my times, but a marked improvement to the feel of the cube. Out of the box, it was clicky and fast; now it's far, far quieter, smoother, and silky. Still fast!

I'd imagine Lubix would do a fantastic job of modding and lubing a cube, but there's nothing they can do that you can't do yourself. Donovan is very forthcoming in publishing their modding techniques on their YouTube channel. So it really depends on your priorities - if you want a cube that's silky smooth out of the box and needs no time or effort from you, go for a Lubix cube; if you're prepared to invest a few hours of your own time, buy a DIY.

Every cube I buy now that I can't get DIY, I end up taking apart, lubing, modding (if I can be bothered, or think it's necessary), then putting back together. Once you've set a cube up yourself from scratch you just won't be satisfied with one set up by someone else. :-)

The V cube 4 is also good. I got mine from hknowstore and it's amazing. Very smooth and fast.

hey whats up just grabbing a new speedcube and thought i'd also get some other sizes and a sq1
what do you guys think of this order
dayan 2x2x2 50mm
dayan zhanchi full size
ss 4x4
ss 5x5
mf8 sq1

preferably alternatives should be available on amazon
(i have amazon prime, so if you could find anywhere that has all 5 of these for less than $55.83 with 2 day shipping be my guest.)

All of those Puzzles are good and I recommend them all if you want them to be your mains.

Dayan 4x4 can be very good if you set a right tension , I still prefer my dayan 4x4 over a shengshou 4x4 though,

Alright, so I want a quiet cube I can use on a plane. I'm thinking Fangshi.. Tips?

I have a fangshi, it's noisier than my 48pem'd Zhanchi. My quietest cube is a 48pem'd Guhong 2. Apparently CPMing a dayan cube will make it even quieter because the hexagonal stalk of the centre piece that forms a sheath around the spring is what makes the clicking sound. If I wanted the ultimate silent cube I'd mod my Guhong a bit more... so I'd say Guhong 2 with 48pem, well tensioned and lubed.

Yeah... I like quiet cubes because I have a tiny baby!

Alright, new question. In YOUR opinion, Fangshi vs. weilong vs. zhanchi. Which do you like best?

Pipkiksass: My zhanchi has pretty much all usable mods done. CPM, 48PEM, Corner base mod.. Basically a zhanchi silk.

Now that I just got a fangshi, I'm stuck between the fangshi and weilong for speedsolving purposes. I think for now, only because I haven't done an ao100 with the fangshi yet, it is the weilong because of how much faster I am with it compared to my other cubes.

As for feel/noise level, definately fangshi between those three cubes.

So I decided to get a Megaminx, But I don't know which one to get. I"ve read on this thread that Mf8, Mefferts, and QJ are pretty good. How are DaYan and Shengshou? I just want a good cube, price doesn't really matter. Any one have some suggestions? Thanks

Those two are the best. If you are willing to mod your shengshou, probably shengshou. If not, I would say Dayan. Shengshou is smoother, Dayan is bumpier.
