I have an Aolong and a Zhanchi, looking for more 3x3s for multiblind. Would like different brands. Any thoughts?

*** just get one and try. Asking repeatedly is not going to help you, since multiple people have done mini reviews for you already.

EDIT: Though I personally recommend the Dayan.

i apologise
i am a very indecisive person
thank you for all your help

Can someone catch me up on the hardware developments in the last few years?

I took a break from cubing sometime in 2011~ Around the time the Lunhui and Zhanchi were just coming out and I think the Guhong II and Lingyun II were just first being heard of. Everyone loved their Guhong including Feliks I believe as well as the Haiyan Memory and Alpha V. In the 4x4 area everyone said the Maru 4x4 was the best but nobody could talk about it because of it being a KO or something.

I'm trying to start cubing again and get improve my average to lower than it was before, 20, and now I look on the cube shops and see all these brands I never heard of, Fangshi, MoYu, QiYi, even a Dayan VI and Dayan Megaminx.

So whats the new commonly loved cubes? Has the Guhong been topped? How are the rest of the Dayan cubes and these newer (to me at least) brands that have popped up? Also What about 4x4, and 5x5s? Those seem to have gotten a lot more love since I stopped as well, even seeing new methods that weren't around when I last cubed. And lastly is the Dayan Megaminx one of the better Megaminxes? Or is still the mf8?

MoYu has taken over the cubing community with the Aolong, Weilong and the Hualong (for the 3x3)
Dayan Cubes are ancient (no offence dayan)
4x4- MoYu Aosu and Yuxin 4x4
5x5- Moyu Aochuang and Moyu Huachuang

Dayan Megaminx is (personally)the best, And YJ Yuhu is another megaminx that can possibly be better than the dayan

Pretty much the only person who uses a Dayan cube as their main is Alex Lau who uses a Guhong. However, now there are so many new 3x3s that there is no one cube that is everyone's main. Between the Moyu Aolong and Hualong, it is quite and equal split, but some still prefer the Moyu Weilong. Some people like the Gans 356 or 357. Then there are also others who prefer the Cong's Design Yueying or Meiying. There is a small minority who still use Zhanchis and Moyu Liyings.

For 4x4, it's Moyu Aosu vs Yuxin (with a slight majority preferring the Aosu) and for 5x5 it's an equal split between the Moyu Aochuang and Huachuang, though some people still use a Shengshou. The Dayan Megaminx takes a bit of lubing, tensioning and breaking in, but it is generally seen as the best megaminx. There are others like the YJ Yuhu and Shengshou, but the Yuhu received mixed reviews and not many use the Shengshou (I think).

It should be that Alex Lau's Guhong is amazing to turn, the Guhong is still a great cube!

Problem is that not many people are willing to spend a long time to break in their cube. The Guhong is crap out of the box. Given the number of 3x3s now, most people would rather get a 3x3 that is decent out of the box.

Moyu and Cong (which is basically a division of Moyu) are very popular, Yuxin is a newcomer but doing well, so is Gans but only the 356 and 357 - their older cubes aren't as good. I don't know much about Fangshi.

If you're unsure where to start, the Aolong v2 seems to fit well with almost anyone. This page may also help:

As a beginner, I like my Aolong v2, Yueying, and I just got a Weilong v2 that I'm still getting used to. Didn't like the Yuxin 3x3, too stretchy/unstable for me although a faster cuber may like it. The Meiying and Hualong are on my list to check out someday when I get faster too so you might like those as well and I'd like to try a Gans as well.

Welcome back!

In 5x5, specially talking about cheap ones, it's also worth mentioning the brand new Cyclone Boys 5x5.

And regarding brands, also YJ is worth mentioning, they make cheap but decent cubes like the Sulong, Chilong (it's been my main for more than a year), Yulong, Guanlong, and the new Yusu 4x4 I've heard is also decent.

And Moyu has made other decent 3x3s, apart from Weilong, Aolong, Hua(n)long, like the Huanying (my current main) and Liying. The only one that was not very good was the Dianma.

QiYi has started to make also decent cubes like the Thundeclap.

The Fhangshi Shuanren and Shengshou Aurora are still decent cubes. The new Fhangshi Guangying I don't know. People say it's fast but unstable.

3x3s -
FangShi thrashed Dayan
MoYu thrashed FangShi
Cyclone Boys tried to get to the top but fell down a slide
Maru CX3 pretty much crashed and burned
ShengShou, DianSheng, HaiYan and Alpha were eaten by the Bermuda Triangle
Gans climbed to the top but stayed still next to MoYu
YuXin was dragged up the mountain by Collin Burns
QiYi and New Island were twins who refused to acknowledge each other
MoYu duplicated theirselves and called it Cong's Design
So basically what cube you choose is up to what you like. It seems that the type of cube that most cubers are choosing between are the Gans 356, Moyu AoLong v2, Cong's Design MeiYing, and the Moyu Hualong. Dayan essentially fell off the face of the earth, mostly because they were releasing inferior cubes to the newer types at a much slower rate (1 per year), compared to MoYu, who are giving out amazing cubes like every 2 weeks, sometimes even less.

laughed my a55 off.
Pity dayan - they invented the torpedoes...had thought they would reign for a long time.

After a while, all the "long" feels kinda similar. Can't say much about the "ying" - have only one - meiying.
Thunderclap feels kinda like a cross between a gans and the long. Cheap but good.

You forgot that YJ, Moyu's parents, tried but failed to stop their offspring from taking over.:p

Their new 4x4 is much better than their new 5x5 but nobody seems to have noticed, yet. :)

You're right, there's also the CB 4x4 which I've heard is good too (not sure if it is better than the 5x5 but I'll believe you), so, in summary, there are a lot of great 4x4s now, Yuxin, YJ, CB and, of course, Moyu which has 3 of them but all a bit overpriced now with this new competition. I already have an Aosu so I'm not buying any of these new 4x4s but I have bought the CB 5x5, as I didn't have any up to now and the $33 to $38 price tag of the Moyu's was a bit too steep for me.

By the way, how about your 3x3 main? Did you stick to the QiYi Bullfight or went back to the YJ Sulong? I'm sticking with the Moyu Huanying for the time being, as I'm doing very good times with it so my Chilong is feeling a bit sad these days :)

Also, I just got a QiYi Thunderclap in the mail but, as I was fearing, it is a bit too small for 2H (at least for me), specially problematic on M slices. Maybe for OH. Anybody else has noticed this / had this problem? My first impressions are meh at best but it was a bit dry out of the box so maybe with some lubing it will improve.
