There really isn't a shortcut to getting fast. You have to work on everything. So my advice is: work on everything.

I'd say learn full PLL. There are only 15 left after 2 look, so you could learn 1 a day for like 2 weeks.

Also yes, get algs for cases you find difficult/take a lot of moves (12+ maybe).

In saying that, I've only ever learned triple sexy for F2L. That's probably why my times get a bit sporadic.

Learn full OLL when you want to bother learning ~50 algs to save a couple of seconds.

There might be easier ways to speed up your F2L, but I don't know what those are.

Practicing with a metronome is easy and it helps. It helped me go from ~25s average to ~16s average in less than a month, but that was years ago. When I get back to those times or better, to a point where I feel the metronome no longer helps me, then I might start practicing your way.

Improvement comes very slowly for me, and I only recommend this because I've tried lots of different practice techniques and this is what proved most effective. Everyone's different and it might not be as effective for you. All I can say is, give it a chance - why not spend an hour practising blind tracking, then do a few solves and see if you notice a difference.
You said it, what works for one might not work for another. I gave it a try because why not, the only reliable way I can track pieces with my eyes closed is by keeping contact with my fingers. It's not as hard for the most part, but there are situations where I can't even track one piece because it moves a lot. I'm sure with enough practice I would be able to have a decent grasp of this technique but once again, that practice time would be better spent with a metronome or just going slow, at least in my case.

Hmmm
PB: 6.92
ao5: 9.74
Time for cross: ~2 unless an Xcross
time for f2l+cross: 7-9
LL: 3-5 sec
OLLS: All 57 plus some alternate algs
PLLS: all 21 plus some alternate algs
Years speedcubing: coming up on my first year this month

Whoah! 6.92! How much do you practice!?! I am just over 3 months with a 14.9 as my best (LL skip) and 18.06 and 18.66 as my second best and third... My ao5 is about 24.51 and I know full 2 look oll and 4 plls (actually 6 but 2 are just repeats backwards) Do you think I could be where you are when I hit a year? (I practice everyday) Also What should I try to learn first, more plls or olls? (my f2l is usually 10-15) If so, which ones are most common... basically which ones, of the oll and pll, should I learn first.

P.S. Because I live in SC and the nearest competition is in like NJ or Washington DC I can't go to any competitions till I am like top 100 in the world...lol... do you know how I could get contact with Chris Hardwick, since he is from Virginia which is the closest to me... I would like to get a cubing event down in the south!

Let's see..
I practice a ton, probably 200+ solves per day. Every day. For the last year. Usually a lot more on weekends. My 6.92 was 29 moves with a PLL skip on a 7 move LL. I do have fullstep 7's though. You should learn more PLLs. Just finish them all, you already probably know like 7. The easy ones that are not from 4 look last layer would be both J perms, T perm, F perm, Y perm, and R perms probably. But learn your g perms. Seriously. Just do it. I put it off and it was a pain. And by no means do you need to be top 100 to go to comps. Seriously. And about Chris Hardwick, I would shoot him a PM. His username is cmhardw I believe.

Hey, not sure how far you would be willing to travel, but me and Sesi(Sessinator on the forums) are in the process of planning a competition in Charlottesville, VA which is the closest to you in a while. It should be announced within the next few weeks.

Sweet... I'm in high school still so it depends on what my parents would be willing to do and when it is... however I'm interested so if you can keep me up with the latest info on it... thanks! :D

Getting Faster

I am new to speed cubing and want to begin getting faster, I have a terrible average of 1min 31seconds, I would like to begin improving since I am stuck. I would like any tips that could possibly help anything and everything, thank you.

Hints and Suggestions for CFOP

Hey guys,
I was wondering:how did you guys start your speedcubing career after the beginners method?

I started out with a few(like 6) F2Ls, then 4LLL, and now i started learning PLL. I have the N perms and the G perms left.Any suggestions or hints?
All posts appreciated :D

Full PLL.

Intuitive F2L.

Full OLL.

In that order.

What probably makes more sense is to start with F2L, and keep doing the LL the way you're used to. As soon as you are comfortable solving F2L pairs, I'd directly jump on 4 look LL which is roughly about a dozen algs to know. When I jumped from beginner method to F2L for the first time, my times increased a lot. But then in the next days it kept decreasing just by practicing, and this is still the case, and will still be for a long time. Once you feel that the progression of your F2L slows down and that you feel ready to learn another bunch of algs, go for PLL. It is the step I am at the moment.

Learning full PLL from the beginning on isn't making much sense, I guess, since it'll take you a while to handle properly all the cases ( recognition + performance ), and might lead to some frustration since it's not going to consistently decrease your times until you're good at it, which might take between a week and a month. Also since you are quite new I suppose you're not comfortable yet with fingertricks which is where algs could really help. Moreover, F2L is really good to start with since it is something you can totally figure out by yourself, thus satisfying and motivating to go on.

Good luck and see you soon sub 60 !

hi, I average at around 55 seconds i know 2look oll 2look pll and f2l but i can't get any faster!

How long do you take for your F2L ( including cross ). Also try to time your cross, you might be surprised how long you take to place 4 edges that are supposed to be placed within 6-8 moves. I got a little stucked at 52-55 as well, then improved my cross, F2L pairs obviously got a little better too and I could get sub50 easily then. Just keep practicing, if you don't see a progress from one day to another it's not a big deal, give it a few days.

Er, quick time split for me
8-10 second F2l
4-7 second LL
Any glaring things to work on here? Most of my PLL Algs are Sub 2, except N perms and E perms.

I've been stuck at 40ish seconds for a looong while now. I do 4LLL with a few random extra OLL and PLL's as well as F2L.
Here is my time split taken from an average of 12.
Cross: 6 seconds
F2L: 22 seconds
Last Layer: 12 seconds
Obviously the problem lies within the F2L. Any really good videos that can give some advanced tips/tricks?
Oh sorry if this is the wrong thread by the way.

Maybe I can help you here, I was at 40sec for a while as well. I worked on my cross a bit, and practiced more than before to pass it. I now do most of my F2L ( including crosses ), in 20-22sec and I average 33sec ao100. I also I learned full PLL lately, not sure it made me much faster yet since I mess up recog ( which isn't great anyway ) from time to time and I'm not fluent with every alg yet. But PLL is definitely something you can get started with if you feel like, especially since you already know a few of them.

About F2L, there is something I did, that I still do from time to time and that I believe helped me big time on F2L. I was doing 5 times in a row the same scramble ( without timer ). Interestingly, the 2-3 first solves were usually quite different. Like I would start the cross with another piece, or start with another F2L pair because I saw it was easier and didn't require a cube rotation. And then most of the time the 2-3 last solves were almost always identical. Usually at the last solve you don't need any look ahead or recognition, because you already know from the previous solve where the next pair is going to be. And to finish I usually did a last solve with time, just to work on tps and fluidity.

These were slow solves so the idea was really to get as optimized as possible with my knowledge of the cube. The goal was definitely, as few cube rotations as possible, but also exploring new ways of solving F2L pairs, and by facing the same F2L cases again and again over a few solves is a great help to actually focus for 5 solves on only a few F2L cases instead of facing new cases every solve. I still have a few cases that irritate me, but I'll overcome these eventually. I did a few of these everyday for 3-4 days, and then it decreased, but I feel it helped a lot. I was stuck at 40-41sec for about 4 days, when I started this, 3 days later I was averaging 37sec. It also helped a lot to recognize the cases I find. Now when I locate my corner and my edge I can directly solve and don't need to think much about how I'm gonna solve it, this also allows me to spot the next corner or edge already instead of thinking of the moves I do.

You can always check out advanced F2L methods of badmephisto, about a few fingertricks or algs, how to use empty slots better and so on. Good luck, and keep practicing !
