If you're doing a lot of solving, it shouldn't take very long for your times to start dropping. I had improved my average 15 seconds 2 days after watching badmephisto's F2L video

F2L taking me 40 secs...

I just registered today to this forum. I was working on F2L for hours straight. I have also looked at the F2L videos. F2L is still taking me 40 seconds..... Help!

Once you're comfortable inserting each pair without thinking about it, just take it slowly and try to look for your next pair without pausing. Once you get the hang of it even with slow turning your times will drop dramatically.

Looking ahead at this stage is not that helpful. You can do a lot of other things to speed up.
Get really fluent with every pair. Learn algs for a few cases. be able to insert pairs in BR and BL slots efficiently. Reduce the no. of cube rotations.

Most of this comes only from practice. So keep doing that and you'll see your times dropping soon enough.

F2L-FB turns or rotations and finger tricks

My main dilemma with F2L has been whether to rotate the cube or insert using F and B turns. I keep seeing people stating to reduce rotations but others say rotate for insertions requiring F and B turns. I R Confused

People say to reduce 'unnessisary rotations' if it is quicker to rotate and insert than it isn't unnessisary. Rotations can really help you look ahead.

Learn to recognize the cases and start to realize what moves you have to do to solve each case. Don't focus on constant turning, focus on your familiarity with each case. After you know each with decent accuracy, then you can start to eliminate pauses and increase TPS, in that order.

I'm just not progressing as fast as I'd like to on F2L so I have been going over what I'm doing right, what I'm doing wrong and what I can improve on and just trying to find the most optimal way to do it.

Why are you actually complaining if you've practiced F2L only for some hours?
Keep practicing if you're still not sub 40/30 with it in like a week, ask for some specific tips like look ahead, some tricks etc.

I was at 40 second F2L within the last two months.

You can try various things, but the fact is that you're going to keep getting faster pretty much no matter what you do, so long as you practice.

You won't even understand how it is that you got faster. It just happens. Your fingers can do amazing things. And your brain may not be designed to do cubes but no one else's is either. As you practice your brain will learn it the same way it learned to do all the other stunningly amazingly complicated things you are very proficient at. Example: Understanding human speech. You got good at that and you didn't know how you did it.

It's difficult to give any advice aside from practice, practice practice! When you ask questions I find it helps when you add a few pieces of info along with your post indicating what level you maybe at. In your case, how long you've known intuitive f2l and how quickly you can solve just the cross. This way others can tailor their answer to your situation.

Practice is the biggest one though! Persistence is your friend!
