There are a lot of things that you can do to build x-crosses in solves. you can try the way of doing just 3 cross edges, but then if the last cross edge is not well placed, it affects lookahead. Its better to do a lot of solves, and learn from the experience that you get during the solves.

I should be in good shape since I've done thousands of solves for long time, lol! Really only doing speedcubing, cfop for about 14 years or so... Unfortunately there are a lot of little things that I haven't tried.

I'm hesitant to get too caught up doing something because I find out later it's really not the most efficient or effective way to do it.
That's why I thought I'd ask before going too far with this.
I only found this site few years ago.
