So use step 1?!

Most of them I already do, but I could improve on pauses.

To Randomno:

It really can take practice. I used to average 1 min - 1:30 with Intuitive F2l and 4LLL. It took me a few months of consistent practice to reach about 40 secs. I now average about 25 secs. Learn F2l really well and practice and you should at least get Sub 1!

Hope this helps,

Zach

I barely ever hit 1:30 on recorded times. I practice a lot but nothing much changes.

Do you use a Rubiks brand? Do you use fingertricks? Time to switch to a better speed cube. Shengshou Aurora's and Wind's are good for beginners. The rubik's speed cube doesn't seem bad either. Really practice your F2l. How much do you practice? An avg of 5 once every week isn't enough to get faster. You need to practice constantly every day for months. If you don't think you can put this in, maybe cubing isn't your hobby. It takes practice, and commitment. Also, look for the things you need to work on. If your F2L needs faster, just turn super slow without pausing. Its a good drill. If your LL is slow, practice recognition and finger tricks. Remember, you need to practice A LOT to improve A LOT. What you put in you will get out.

Hope this Helps,

Zach.

Do you use a Rubiks brand?

No.

Do you use fingertricks?

Yes.

Time to switch to a better speed cube.

Did that last month. I use a Gans III and sometimes my Zhanchi.

What do you mean specifically by "beginners"?

Really practice your F2l.

That's the main thing I need to improve on. I'm very slow on recognition and insertion (which is bascally what F2L is).

How much do you practice?

Too much.

An avg of 5 once every week isn't enough to get faster.

I guessed that bit.

You need to practice constantly every day for months. If you don't think you can put this in, maybe cubing isn't your hobby.

I cube pretty much every day, but I've only been cubing sine about October.

If your F2L needs faster, just turn super slow without pausing. Its a good drill.

It would help a bit with recognition but probably not much.

If your LL is slow, practice recognition and finger tricks.

It's not very slow. I make the cross in 2 algs max, then do one on the seven OLLs pretty quickly. I then do the T or Y perm (just because I learnt them from my 2x2 solving and they finish CPLL), which I usually recognise quickly but sometimes pretty slowly. After that it's either U(a), U(b), H or Z.

And kind of unrelated but I got my first sub-50 earlier.

What should I train now?

Hello,
I start cubing 4 months ago. My times now are 30-40s and PB is 28.6x. I know full PLL, two-look OLL + few cases, and half-intuitive F2L.
Here are my average times for Fridrich steps:
Cross:~5s
F2L:15-25s
PLL and OLL:~10s

What should i train now?

PS.Sorry for my bad English, propably you can see several mistakes in this post.

F2L. Always F2L. And that includes cross. Do metronome solves, starting at 40 TPM (horrendously slow, I know!) with zero pauses. Move up the TPM only when you can consistently get zero pauses.

And that will do until sub-20 at least.

LL speed will come automatically, as you do more and more solves, don't train it on its own yet.

just practice f2l its the key. i personally just did solves and tried to look ahead the pairs while doing that, i am easily sub 20 now and my f2l is good, atleast in my opinion. for ll i would also suggest to just do it, and try to get a good recognition. for execution just pick one alg and practice it by doing it over and over again, and maybe even time it.

my best average of 5 is 29 seconds and my best is 22 ( really lucky) It take me a long time to do pll and oll but f2l is easy for my ( i once got a 7 seconds f2l :)) i look ahead in f2l while going fast and i know about 10/21 pll and some oll's. I also know some coll. I began cubing 2 months ago and i looked up some vids that said multislotting and x cross, Can anyone explain what this is. Here are my times ( step by step, with inspection time for each step)

Cross:3.65(lucky)
!st f2l pair:2.39
2nds f2l pair:2.03
3rd f2l pair:2.46
4th f2l pair:2.42
oll+pll:10.01 ( lucky, new the pll)

Multislotting - solving two F2L pairs simultaneously, or influencing a pair whilst inserting the previous pair to make it more easily solveable
X-cross - solving the cross and one F2L pair simultaneously, leaving only 3 F2L pairs remaining to be solved.

As TDM says, those splits are completely useless.

If you want to get faster, visit the first post on this thread and follow the instructions, but just in the interest of being useful:

Learn full PLL. It's only another 11 algs, and really not that hard.

Why do you know COLL when you only know 'some olls'? Learn 2 look OLL and get good at it. Don't worry about COLL yet.

Don't overreach. X-crosses and multislotting are pretty advanced seeing as you are averaging sup-30.

You don't "look ahead in f2l while going fast", or you'd be sub-20, or even sub-15. Lookahead is when you spot the next pair while inserting the current pair. If you're doing that and averaging sup-30 then something is very wrong!

Dedicate some time to learning good 2-look OLLs and learning the rest of PLL. With time and practice, your last layer will improve.

what can i do to get faster

hello i have been cubing for a lil while i am new to this site though i currently avg a lil under 30 seconds i know full pll and about 1/3 to about half of full oll my pb is 19.07 seconds but i have had many solves in the low 20's every once in a while i will get like 3 or so solves in the 21-23 sec range then my time shoots backs up to around 30 seconds
how can i improve my f2l i usealy finish it in around 20 seconds and i solve the cross in around 3-4 seconds
and why do my times vary so much i think i am sub 30 now but i havnt timed myself recently but when i do i will get times in the low 20's but then it shoots back up to around 30 or high 30's

In step 2 it says
2 Look OLL
Edge Orientation - 2 algorithms
Corner Orientation - 7 algorithms

2 Look PLL
Corner Permutation - 3 Algorithms Aa/Ab and E/V/Y/Na/Nb
Edge Permutation - 4 algorithms - Ua, Ub, Z, H

Shouldn't it be OLL edge 3 algo's and PLL corner 2 algo's.
Updated, thanks. OLL edge is technically 2 though. The third one is just a combination of the other two.

For cross, 3-4 seconds sounds okay. Tell us more about your F2L. Have you learned looking ahead? Have you looked into learning F2L algorithms to solve some cases which are difficult/cumbersome to do intuitively? (Info about these are in the OP).

Generally the longer it takes you to solve the cube, the more seconds your times vary. There are so many factors that go into solving the cube and since it takes you several seconds to solve it there is a large margin for error. I think at yours speed it's completely normal to range from 20 to high 30 seconds solves. As you improve your consistency should improve as well.

[3x3 CFOP] General advice to improve - Sub 20 cubers' responses if possible

Hello, I used to solve the 3x3 in 16 seconds on average 3 years ago, but I stopped cubing completely until about a month ago. I picked up a lot of the knowledge I already had but something I need to work on is looking ahead since I completely lost that skill. Right now I'm very inconsistent, sometimes I solve the cube in 18-22 seconds, sometimes in 26-30, most of the time in between those times. I've done 5 sub 16 times I believe and my PB since I came back is 14.XX (it was 12.8 before, PLL skip, though the 14.XX was an OLL skip). What I'd like to achieve again is getting sub 20 times consistently, and then I can work on becoming sub 15. Now that I've introduced myself I'm gonna talk about my current times a little bit more in depth.

I always solved the cross on top, but since I came back I'm solving it on bottom and so far it's really hard to transition to the first F2L pair. I solve it in under 4 seconds on average.

When my look ahead was pretty decent, I remember solving cross + F2L in under 10 seconds, but right now it takes me 16 seconds for that.

OLL + PLL takes me another 7.97 seconds on average (150 solves on LLtrainer). I do a 2 look OLL, but that's actually not the problem since I recognize and execute the cases decently fast. Only problem is when I have a dot case (no edges oriented) since I have to do 3 algorithms, but I'll learn those cases soon. Then there's PLL. I know 18/21 right now, but the 4 G's I learnt them yesterday, so my recognizion takes as much time as my execution on those cases. I'll learn the remaining 3 cases in the following 2 days. As a side note, before I stopped cubing I knew around 12 PLL's, so most of the time I had to do a 3-4 look last layer and yet I managed to average ~16 seconds. This leads to something I already knew: Cross + F2L is the most important part, and at the moment that's what I'm practicing most, with the metronome method.

I'm certain I'll be solving everything faster, specially the last layer, once some new cubes arrive home (HuanYing, Aurora, Zhanchi, Cyclone Boys). My only speed cube today is an old Guhong that locks up a lot and whose springs sound rusty. It's completely dry after 2 years left alone, so yeah, I'm impatient for my new cubes, which should arrive in the next week.

So after all of this info about me, it would be nice to be given some advices by the most experienced cubers, and some info about yourselves aswell:

PB:
Ao5:
Time to solve cross:
Time to solve F2L + cross:
Time to solve LL:
Amount of OLLs known:
Amount of PLLs known:
Years you've been speedcubing:

I would really appreciate if you could answer these questions, and if you'd like, give some advice you think helped you achieve your current times.

Thanks.

Welcome back to the forum!

It sounds like you can easily get back to your old times. For ll, just practicing the new algs in solves with recognition will help a lot. For f2l, learn better ways to solve hard cases and do slow turning for look ahead. Look at the how to get faster with the cfop method thread. You really just need to do solves to get back into it.

I average about fifteen seconds. My pbs are in my signature. 2 sec cross, 10 sec f2l and cross, the rest ll. I know full oll and pll.

I'm actually new to this forum, but thanks for the welcome.

My F2L is really good in the sense that I had been cubing for more than 3 years before I stopped so it really is easy for me recognize and insert pairs from different angles. The problem is that I forget to focus on a different pair and thus I pause a lot, but as you said, if I was good at it before, I probably will be better soon. I don't think I'll ever learn full OLL since it doesn't help that much. In fact I recall watching Feliks' WR Ao5 and he does at least one 2-look OLL. But I probably will learn some cases that appear a lot and are hard to solve (like the dots) and once I finish learning PLL and practice recognition for some weeks my last layer will definitely be faster.

Thanks for your answer.

Some algos in oll start with fruruf, that's why it looks as if faz uses 2look. But really, full oll helps quite a bit, and most of the algs are really easy.

I don't think the algs are hard, it's just that (at first) you don't know what algorithm to apply to each case since there are so many. I honestly don't think solving 2 seconds faster is worth that much effort unless you want to be sub 10, but I might be wrong. Also depends on the person and how fast you learn.

I thought that too at first, but with cubebankas oll trainer it was really easy. If you practice them enough it's not hard to recognize them. Also, once you get faster again, 2 seconds will be awesome.

In fact I recall watching Feliks' WR Ao5 and he does at least one 2-look OLL.
Yeah he's not doing 2-Look OLL in that video. One of the solves he does edge orientation (4th solve) but that's because he's setting up the case for ZBLL, which is far more advanced (hundreds of algorithms instead of the "mere" 57 for OLL).

I concur though that you don't need to learn full OLL. Definitely finish those PLLs though and work on LL since 8 seconds with 3LLL can be improved (Feliks can do 3LLL in probably like 4 seconds or less). Good to hear that you think Cross + F2L is the most important, I agree with that too. I think it's the most interesting and fun aspect of improving as well. I've worked primarily on looking ahead and that has gave me the biggest improvement.

Average ~13.5 sec.
Cross ~1.5 sec
Rest of F2L ~6.5 sec
1/2 Look OLL + PLL ~5.5 sec
I know around 25 OLLs and Full PLL
