Howdy folks,

How often do you guys re-lube pieces and/or core?

I have a Guhong 2 which I've been using nearly every day for 6 months. It's lubed with Lubicle which, from previous discussions here with windhero, I gather is probably slightly heavier than Lubix, which is (again probably) ~43k. After about 4 months (let's say 10k solves) I cleaned it, including core, and relubed. Occasionally, maybe every 4/5k solves, I put a drop of lube on the pieces and work in.

I have a Zhanchi which is pretty new, and was lubed with Traxaas 50k and Maru when bought. I had to retension it, and noticed that the springs had no lube on them, so added a drop of Lubicle in my favoured way to the core, and a drop to the edges for lolz.

Thing is, it now feels like the Zhanchi needs re-lubing, and the lube's only been on there maybe 800-1000 solves.

How often do people generally re-lube their cubes, in terms of # solves, rather than time (which would probably be pretty arbitrary!). I guess this is really 2 separate questions - how often do you apply a little lube to your pieces; how often do you disassemble and relube the core?

Bearing in mind I'm using c.45k for both core and pieces.

Thanks! :-)

My girlfriend has very long hair and somehow it always ends up in my core. While cleaning the hair and other rubbish out from around the core I lube the pieces. This is maybe every 2000 solves. The core doesn't need to be lubed that often at all. I suppose the core needs to be lubed every 10k solves? It varies a lot. I just kinda do it when I feel like it. Sometimes I even used to lube my guhong if it started to get too fast.

Food Grade CRC - Does it melt cubes?

I did try searching the forums and really found nothing specific about it. Food grade CRC says it's safe for plastics on the label, so I was wondering if it would melt cubes.
Yes, I have 50k differential oil but I feel CRC feels faster on pieces (tried friend's cubes)

Lubrication Question

Hi, I recently bought a GuHong V2 and it was very smooth out of the box. Should I leave it alone and just tension it, or should I lube with lubix as well?

I just got a zanchi a while back and I'm not sure if it came lubed or not, I don't have any proper lube so I left it just tensioned I think you should just tension and if it gets a little stiff or you want it much quicker than it is lube it

Okay, thanks for the suggestion! I'll see what others say and then I'll decide what to do.

Hello,

I've bought a few new 3x3x3 cubes (I had a long cubing pause) and I've seen, that there are some special lubing techniques/modding. I came here to ask, what the best lubing/modding technique for each cube is.

My new 3x3x3 cubes are:

C4
C5
ShuangRen
LingYun V2
ShengShou Wind (already applied silicon spray)
ShengShou Slide-way (this will be my lego cube, when I glue lego parts onto it =))
ZhanChi
GuHong V1
GuHong V2

I don't have to much choices right now (silicon spray and "reely" differential silicon oil (visco 7000), which I've been told is similar to lubix lube).

Thanks in advance,
Swoncen

Alright I'm no expert, but I'm busy procrastinating from studying for physics finals, so I'll give it a go.

When I say "Lube it like normal" I mean using silicone oil/ traxxas/ lubix, w/e for the core. Lots of core lubing tuts on youtube if you search :)

C4: Mod to reduce lockups (camera isn't that great): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BX8Kz27U2D8

C5: Lube it like normal, I've only used silicone oil/ lubricant on mine, but it turns quite nicely.

ShuangRen: Lube the core like normal, don't put too much on the pieces (I used a drop or so), or else it will get sticky and nasty.

Lingyun V2: Don't really think there's a mod specifically for that, not like it needs it. Lube like normal with silicon oil.

ShengShou Wind: Florian Mod, tutorial by al60 shows it pretty well, imo. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N6AJY2-EcJ0

ShengShou Slide-Way: I've no idea what that is, so I'll just skip it.

Zhanchi: If you want to mod it: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uHqNqVOuujw for just lubing, lube like normal, put some on pieces as well.

Guhong v1: Regular lubing works great. If you want to mod it (cyoubx guhong): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VOKA2n_6qzg

Guhong v2: 48 point edge mod makes it smooth :D

But tbh, alot of these cubes don't really need a bunch of modding, some proper tensioning and lubing works just as well.

Good luck! (i've effectively procrastinated 7 minutes! :D)

Thank you uniacto, that was very useful! The ShengShou Slide-Way Cube is just the normal ShengShou which you can buy for 2-3 Dollars. It reminds me of a Type-D Cube, not only because it has the rough stickers, but also the same sound and feel. It's a pretty good cube for that money. (http://z-cube.net/ShengShou_3x3_1.html)

Another question:

I just lubed my GuHong V2 with Lubix and tensioned it. It's now crazy fast, (maybe too fast?) and when you flick it hard, it can turn 180 degrees. Does this mean I overlubed it, and if I did, is there anyway to fix it?

Thanks!

No thats normal. It means you did a good job of lubing it.
