I'm looking to make a checkered patter with my 2x2 and 4x4. Not the one where you just flip the sides, but where three sides flip (eg. blue, red and white are checkered, and then green, orange and yellow are checkered).... NOW I understand that it is not actually possible because it is an even numbered cube, but I saw where only the blue, red and white side was checkered and not the other three sides. That is what I would like to figure out how to do.

1- swap two adjacent pieces with T perm/J perm/R' F R F' R U2 R' U R U2 R'
2- y U R U' R' U'

For 2x2:
U2 F' U' F2 R U F U' R U' (10f*)

Edit: ninja'd. TDM's solution may be longer, but easier to memorize.

Is there an alg set that solves the 3 remaining edges if you already have a tripod (F2L-1, and 2x2x1 on U layer)? If not, does anyone want to find out how many cases there would be? Also, this would disregard the 4 remaining corners.
If you don't include equivalent positions after a rotation around the UFR corner, but you do include inverses and the solved case, there are 24 cases. I will work on generating good algs and post them here.

Okay, thank you! I would prefer if they could be optimal (or close enough), since I'm thinking about using something like this for FMC. Thanks!

If all 3 edges are permuted correctly, rotate about UFR so that the misoriented edges are in the U layer
If one edge is permuted correctly, rotate about UFR so that it is in the RF position
If no edges are permuted correctly, rotate about UFR so that the edges are oriented (if possible)

Remember, you can use mirrors or inverses of the alg to affect the corners differently. I tried to get an algorithm for each case that starts/ends with U, R, and to aid in cancelations.
