When solving Yao and you are finishing the last 4 centers do you try to keep the same side on bottom the whole time and just do a lot of slices or do you move the whole cube (Right 3 sides if the cross is on the left) for more efficient slices? I hope that made sense.

Also, I asked a question in the request an alt section but I don't think I got the answer I was needing. Lets say I am solving 4x4 and I have 4 unsolved edges left. When I slice over two of the edges get paired up and so would be messed up again after slicing back. The person responded with a page about the last 2/3 edges, but this seems to be an odd case where I might have to do them individually or switch two of the edges before I slice.
My personal approach is to use comms. There's probably a faster alg.

First, flip one of the edges so that it's like a mirror. With your edges on FU and FD:
r F u' F' U2 F u F' U2 r'

(r and u are single layer slices)

4x4 cube last layer problem (building the cross)

Hello

I recently bought a rubix 4x4 cube, and with the help of some tutorials on youtube i managed to solve 3 layers of the cube correctly.
In the 4x4 tutorial i was redirected to this link (3x3 cube tutorial) to solve the last layer. ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MaltgJGz-dU )
The guy in the tutorial says there are only four options when you want to build the cross.
1. just the centerpiece is placed correctly
2. a 'L' shaped thing (3 pieces)
3. a long rod (3 pieces)
4. the cross itself

when i built the first 3 layers i got a different option, which is that i got a centerpiece and only ONE edgepiece (in terms of rubix 3x3 ofcourse) .
i started over a couple of times but i still get this weird situation, anyone who can help me?

You're learning the wrong method for the 4x4, look up a tutorial for reduction. it's very simple, and if you want to get faster you can learn yau3-2-3 or something.

well, you could just do the 4x4x4 OLL parity alg which flips one edge and continue as 3x3x3 (although you may also have PLL parity so look up the alg for that as well). If you want to do a 4x4x4 semi direct solve, look up K4 or OBLBL (but I would recommend the former) but Yau or some other form of reduction is much faster in the long run.

Never heard of a layer-by-layer approach for 4x4. Reduction is the way to go, you basically solve the centers, pair up the edges, and then you're left with a 3x3 to solve normally.

You could do it LBL. My friend has done it before. But it is inefficient. Just do reduction

I Follow Noah Ricardson tutorial on youtube.. BTW im still searching for the K4 method but, its hard to find my pattern ( Top Layer Parity ) :(

I am trying to improve my edge pairing method on 4x4 and would appreciate advice.

Today I use 323 pairing (with Hoya) using a clumsy mix of Dw slices and inserts on both right and left. I start with a Dw' then insert the appropriate top edges to BR, BL and FL before slicing back. I then alternate between inserts to FR and FL, inserting bottom edges and slicing Dw/Dw' each time. No rotations. It's not very ergonomic and I'd like to fix it now rather than continue to practise a suboptimal method.

I'd like to switch to slicing Uw while inserting bottom edges, to keep insertions at the same slot, FR. For the last 5 edges I have this sorted, but I'm struggling to work out the best way to solve the first 3 edges. I'd like to minimize rotations and back insertions if possible, and keep the look ahead simple. All of the 323 tutorials I have found just explain how the pairing works, and rotate all over the place with no regard to ergonomics.

Any suggestions? What do others do?
