4x4 first two centers help

Hey guys,is it better to make the first two centers on fixed faces like U and D or R and L,is it faster in the long term?

I make the first center wherever I see most number of pieces and then rotate accordingly to find the second center pieces,I find average 13-14 seconds on first two centers and have 6-7 rotations every time.so any tips or advice to get sub 5 centes and less rotations would be helpful

also, for the rest 3 centers it takes me about 10 seconds and I do it this way:
make 1,do an x' rotation, make the 2nd and then another x' and finish the centers,is that how most redux users do it?

also,I want to know from people fast on 4x4 what is the or what should be the ideal time ratio between first two centers and the rest 3 centers, mine is 14:10 = 7:5 as you can see from above paragraph.

Soo.....yeah any help to get faster, reduce rotations and better lookahead will be appreciated

I've never really focused on centers individually on 4x4 so I don't know my exact time break down. I do redux in 40-50 seconds and my edges are pretty slow, so my centers are somewhat decent. I typically build the first center wherever and then rotate it down to the D face. Then I do the opposite center on U following by a z rotation. Then I just do x rotations and solve the rest. Your first two centers should be much faster from what I can see. All that is really going to come down to is practice. One thing that will probably help is reducing the move count of the first two center. Instead of going for speed, slow down and just do an FMC type thing for centers and that should probably help a bit.

Thanks for the advice,I like the FMC Idea you suggested and I'll try practicing second center on top,I usually keep my second center at F,maybe that is slowing me down quite a lot,I now see sub 15 centers the main requirement to be sub 60,atleast for me.Bytheway my edges are quite decent, about 25-30 seconds,so yeah I badly need to improve on centers.
depends yow left and right would probolbly work best.

I'm not getting this left and right thingy, plz explain in detail.

The 4x4x4 Help Thread

Um so I am kind of new to the whole speed cubing thing and i was just wondering, what would be the fastest strategy/algs for solving a 4x4x4 and I am looking to replace my current 4x4x4 so what are some suggestions for 4x4x4's to get?

4x4 Help needed

I have a few 4x4 questions

Will doing 4x4 improve my times at 3x3 more so than just practicing 3x3 considering that this is the first time I'm doing 4x4

When doing 4x4 is single edge pairing good or does triple edge pairing give you a significant advantage. When doing multiple edge pairing and you see 2 edge pairs that are in the formation of last 2 edges but they are not the last two edges, do you imideatly slice or apply the last 2 edges alg

Finally what is the barrier at which you have to start practicing. For example at oh it took me less then a week to get sub 40 then I actually had to practice more to slowly inch to sub 30. What is this barrier for 4x4 considering I avg 15-18. In other words how fast in a week.

PLEASE HELP! How do you convert 3x3 Pll algorithms to 4x4?

Hi, I'm new to 4x4 and I've solvedit several times, but I'm having trouble converting someof the PLL algorithms from the 3x3 to the 4x4. I first solve the centers, and then pair up edges, and after that, I solve using the 3x3 method. I have a problem with one PLL specifically, which is PLL #18, the one that switches the diagonal corners and adjacent edges. On the 3x3, I use the algorithm:(R' U R' Dw') x (Lw' U R' U') (Lw R U') (R' U R U). Please notonly show me the way to do this algorithm, but also how you convert or do all algorithms. THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Don't think of wide turns as 2-layer turns, think of them as "all-but-one layer turns". So on a 4x4, your wide turns in a 3x3 alg will turn 3 layers; on a 5x5 the wide turns will turn 4 layers, etc.

This is such an interesting question :D I remember when I had no idea what was what D: outer layers are normal turns but the inner layers on the 4x4 are "1" middle slice for 3x3

Watch this video it will help you.

That is for if you want to stick with Reduction. If you're interested in Yau (which is basically a different form of Yau without looking around the cube for pieces as much), watch this video:

EDIT: ninja'd. But still, I like this explanation of Yau the best.
