i took a lot of my time on the cross. the big thing that help me was knowing color scheme relationship, blue/green orange/red green and the adj. edges going clockwise and counterclockwise.

what happened to me the most was that i would have 2 opposite colors correct and 2 opposite color flipped. i could do the cross fast, but i would make the mistake of putting them in the wrong relation. i would get the colors opposite of eachother every time though.

for a while, i didnt care about making cross wrong because a short trick to fix the cross (M2 U2 M2 with bad edge on the front and back). Also while performing this quick fix, you are able to look ahead fairly well for first f2l pair because it only hides the front and back edge on the top when you do the M2. this give you adequate time to look at the front right slot and front left slot for edge and corners. if you are good, pretty much the whole cube can be inspected for corner and edges.

from doing this "fix" many times, i would reccomend doing R2' r2 U2 R2' r2 instead of M2 U2 M2, just because i personally can get better views while doing it like this.

the last trick i would use is try playing around with double layer turns to help place cross edges, sometimes you can find nifty tricks.

Yea, age doesn't matter for cubing. I'm 12, avg about 20-21ish. Experience and practice matters.
I also sometimes use M2 U2 M2 iif I see its too hard to make the cross properly (by hard I mean awkward moves).
And for a beginner, don't worry about pre planning the whole cross just yet.
I would recommend 2 cross pieces pre planned during inspection, so you can hopefully find a way to solve the other pieces while solving the first 2. Eventually you will be able to pre plan all 4 pieces in under 12 seconds.
Practicing this is really the only way I found helpful after I watched tuts. I practiced just cross solving for a few hours (a while a day) and now I can sub 2.5 most crosses, while looking ahead during F2L. Whoa...this is a long post, hope it helped.

If you find M moves uncomfortable, do not panic. I found them annoying when I was a beginner; all you have to do right now is practice planning two cross pieces (as Joker said), and you'll be faster in no time.

Good Luck!

For when you get better: If you have a blindfold, memorize the cross then solve it with the blindfold on. Then you'll be able to solve the cross while looking for the first F2L pair.

Learn your color scheme in and out, find the best place to start the cross, and align it with the centers at the end. Also, try to watch how placing certain edges affects other edges. The rest is simply practice.

1. Color neutral
2. Experiment with short ways to get the edges in
3. Experiment with combos

Just from solving over and over again got my cross to maybe about 1.5 seconds. As you cube more, you start to notice neat tricks/combos you can use to get 2+ piece in a single sequence of moves.

thank you guys!
I am not a Color neutral person lol!
and 1 more thing hj`!
I had full CFOP but i can not sub-20, my average is 23, so can you guys give me some tips to practice.

For sub 20 you'll probably want an F2L around 12-13 seconds or less with 2LLL. If you're slower than that, I'd practicing slowing down and looking ahead in F2L. If you're faster than that, you should probably work on your last layer recognition and speed. You can use the last layer + last slot scramble generator under 3x3 subsets at qqtimer.

My cross + F2L used to take 14 s and I still got sub 20. Try executing algorithms a little bit faster. You should be able to get OLL+PLL in 6 seconds with practice :)

Being quick at cross?

I know this sounds stupid to most of you but I'm trying to practice all parts of a solve separately, so... yeah. What I would like to discus is the cross. I just cannot do it quick enough. How are you supposed to do it so that you can have it done within a second? Are you supposed to look for something during inspection? A detailed description would be nice.
