Never solve every edge piece one by one. Solve the cross with the pieces being correct with respect to each other, then AUF if necessary. If there is an edge on the top layer (cross on bottom) that is flipped, save moves by solving it together with another edge (couldn't really explain well, this is where watching a video comes in handy)

ah...
well if its short... not as long as badmephisto's (I did a double take when I saw 10 mins on his advanced cross)
whats AUF?

What's wrong with watching a 10 minute long video? You would have watched it twice by now.

Shouldn't it be ADF?

just watch that video. whats wrong with it being long? take a week to watch it, it doesnt matter. (anything some one is going to say, is going to be in that video)

and as for look ahead and getting better, that gets better over time.

i have a cross problem too... :( i can't keep track of my first f2l pair.. ang my cross sometimes go wrong... :( any video help?

I agree with the others the video is definately worth watching.

I also agree that the best method of improvement is practice. I know its a cliche on the forums but it is one for a very good reason. I am just beginning to feel the cross is beginning to work for me, after 4 months. I am comfortable with it long after being comfortable with F2L and being able to BLD any pair, long after lookahead and long after learning full PLL and OLL.

Even now my Cross --> 1st F2L pair transition sucks and I am working on that now.

However if you are having issues getting to grips with it, then Badmephisto mentions a few 'rules' when planning the cross in his videos that are well worth considering when planning your solve.

1) How many good edges do you have and bad edges? - A good edge can be placed, correctly oriented in the D layer with a single turn (R, R2, F, F2 ....). More of the time you will want to plan to turn the bad edges into good ones whilst inserting other edges so you are not wasting moves.
2) Plan the solution by:-
a) What is my first edge to be placed
b) What do I then need to do to place edges 2 and 3
c) Where will edge 4 end up

But this information is all detailed with examples in his video so I would highly recommend you watch it if at all possible.

You just need to practice doing it in your head, and don't look while doing it. Memorize it, go over it a hundred times in your head, and then go for it. Scramble it up and try it a thousand more times. The most important thing to realize is that you are conditioning your mind. If you just place them one by one, and you don't memorize anything, then that is what you will get better at rather than the proper way that you actually want to improve at. It's hard in the beginning, but you need to bare with it and trust that you'll make small improvements day to day that add up to an enormous improvement over a long time period.

When I started out, it took me over five minutes to figure out and memorize a full cross to the point of not having to think about it when I finally started the solve. If you just figure it out, half memorize it, then go for it and focus on the cross while doing it, then you are not conditioning your mind to be able to do it properly. It will take you minutes the first time, but later on you'll be doing it effortlessly in barely any time.

Don't worry about speed for now, even if your inspection is ten minutes long.

Scramble F2 L2 R B L' U' L B' L U2 L' U R U R F2 R' F2 U2 L2 D' R' F2 L' D'
Cross D' R' B2 D2 R2 D

D' B2 L' R' D'

Firstly if you're colour neutral, then stick with that. Secondly, there is a new Badmephisto video that is like a simplified cross, which is still quite fast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EOEZlFAsSL0
Also, if you're wanting it to be really optimal, then check out Prisma Puzzle Timer, it's timing software, but if you do the scramble (starting with white on top and green on front) then go to View -> Tips, it will show you all the optimal solutions.

thanks for the help...
i watched badmephistos video (long one not the new one) and it helped alot
To summarise i think i just need to position edges along a face that has an edge that i am about to position
BTW is U2 counted as a single move because since i watched the video (and with massive perusal) I have managed to reduce my cross moves to around 6-10 which is good,
Still struggling with lookahead but i guess like you guys said it will come with practice
:)

i suck at cross as well..i do the cross on the bottom but it takes me like 9 or even 10 movements to solve it..ivo done the X cross as well but randomly ..thanks to this i cant low my times.. =((

Help with cross

Ok, so tomorrow im having a Rubiks competition on college organized by my math teacher and other math teachers lol..the thing is that i use Fridrich method, but im just so slow at cross(it takes me about 10 second or so to do it)..i have no problem when doing the cross on the bottom(since i always do it in the bottom..i got the hang of it.)..Now.,would anyone give me some tips for doing the cross faster so i can practice today? Im not too much worried since im the only one of the Rubiks club in class that knows fridrich..but i just wanna practice..

Look up badmephisto on youtube, he has a good tutorial.

You should really use the One answer question thread, instead of making a new thread with every question you have
