for edges i use many different things. this is my breakdown. i use white cross, and so i will explain what i do.
1. solve white or yellow center
2. solve the opposite center (white or yellow)
3. hold white center on left
4. pair up 2 cross edges and place them on the white center in the right spots (if blue and green are the solved edge, i make sure they are opposite, just like making a 3x3 cross)
5. pair up one more cross edge and place it in the WRONG spot.
6. using only 3R, r, R, and U, make the rest of the centers. (i typically do red, green, orange, then blue)
7. pair last cross edge using 3R, r, R, and U again.
8. put last cross edge in place of the one in the WRONG spot
9. put the last cross edge in the last open slot.
10. restore centers.
11. place yellow on top.
12. 3 pair, slice with u'
13. 3 pair backward, slice with u
14. fix the last 2 edge groups or skip or you've ran into a bad case and deal with 2 pairing the remaining edges.
15. redux finished, solve 3x3 with cross skip.

edit: i think masterofthebass (dankoen) has a video tutorial on yau redux. i do everything the same as him, only after the cross edges are completed, he slices first and then 3 pairs and then spams 2 pairing for the rest. I do not slice after the cross and I 6 pair. only difference.

4x4x4 edge pairing problems...

Im trying to solve 4x4x4 cube using Chris Hardwicks solution on speedcubing.com, but I'm having problems with edge pairing. I can get to the stage of storing three edge pairings in the U layer, and three in the D layer, but when I try to get a fourth into either layer I always ending breaking either the newly made pairing or a previously made pairing as I restore the centres.

Any help would be very much appreciated.

4x4x4 Problem

Im solving the 4x4x4 cube and i have all the centers and edges done so i can now solve the cube like a 3x3x3, but the white center is the opposite of the blue and one of the edges are "White-white" "Blue-Blue" so im not able to solve it like a 3x3x3. Ill upload a pic soon. have no time right now
what to do?

What to do when all the corners are rotated the wrong way?
like this

I LOL'd. Solve it like a 3x3. If you know how to solve a 3x3, you should be able to fix this easily. The only differences are that the 4 center pieces instead of one and 2 edges in a pair instead of one.
You obviously didn't even look at the pictures.

@einz0r Hold the cube with yellow on top and orange in front and do Uw2 L2 R2 Uw2, where Uw2 means turing the outer AND inner U layers together, twice. After that, proceed to solve like normal.

On a 4x4, the centers are "floating".. meaning they can be placed anywhere.. it is not only important to know opposite colors, but also their relation in a clockwise (or anticlockwise) rotation... keep that in mind next time you solve a 4x4... it helps to use a 3x3 for reference at first and pick 3 centers in to build in the same order everytime until you are comfortable with a freestyle center contruction.

Speedsolving the 4x4 Method

Hey everyone I was wondering to speedsolve the 4x4 in competition what methods algorithms did/do you have to learn besides the basic solve centers first then pair edges?

4x4 algorithms? Guide?

So I've been learning how to solve the 4x4 and have been using "Ryan's Guide to Solving the 4x4".
I think it's a pretty good guide in pdf format and I'm well on my way in terms of understanding the methodology. Many times, however, a situation will arise that doesn't seem to be covered in this guide and I find myself having to look it up.

Is there a site that anyone would recommend that's a little bit more comprehensive?
