The Max7219 is a really versatile chip. I've used it for other applications with bar LED's as well. Good luck with the project :)
Thanks. Although I'm busy at the moment and the parts will probably take at least a month to arrive. They are like 1/10 the cost of dumb retailers like AdaFruit who put these quirky descriptions and charge way too much for a few cents of components.

would this be allowed at comps?
IDK. Currently only stackmat timers are allowed, but this is a secondary display and I think times are recorded from the stackmat and not the display.

Stackmat timers are required at WCA competitions, but there are no requirements on displays - you could run an entire competition without any displays.
but could you run it with custom displays, given that the times are recorded from the timers and the displays are only for spectators?

and if another timer brand such as YJ proved to be sufficiently reliable (and as a bonus didn't have the timer reset issues), could we see other timer brands being allowed?

i doubt WCA competition will allow more than one model of timer because the timers might time at slightly different rates otherwise

The original QJ timer was known to go faulty over time. I saw a video once a long time ago that showed the QJ timer running at 2x speed of a speedstacks timer. There is something to be said about consistency across timing devices, however, the WCA still allows Speedstacks Gen2 timers in competitions which we have known for a whole decade are awful.

Any display can be used in competition, nothing regulates what kinds of displays can be used nor are they required.

Thanks for the info. That means in theory the homemade janky LED matrix display could be used in comps. More realistically a company like YJ could be make a display for maybe a quarter of the cost and as long as they work decently since there's no regs maybe comp organizers will implement them.

For the timers - QJ I believe is a super old company and their cubes weren't high quality either. I don't believe that speedstacks fundamentally has better quality control than other companies, and maybe YJ timers could be tested unofficially to see their reliability.

My gan air gets dirty really quickly
I wash them with warm soapy water and a brush and after an hour its dirty and dusty and has weird stains on the edges.

I have a stickered RS3M (not 2020) from two years ago and I noticed the cube always feels sticky. I tried wiping it down with a damp cloth multiple times but I think what it is is the very edges of the stickers have a bit of sticker residue that's like seeped out slightly from underneath the sticker. Has anyone else had this experience? Overall the sticker shades look good and they haven't peeled yet, but the stickers themselves have some slight irregularities and wrinkles, leading me to believe they're not the best quality.

I really hope this chat is still active:
where can i get new stickers for ANY cube and also not too expensive? I have no clue honestly
you can even pay a bit more for custom stickers here

So I got the angstrom aosu wrm. I like the settings and all but 1 problem I have is, each session it feels almost perfect at first but after a while, it becomes uncontrollably fast. It feels like it gets looser and the layers turn much to quickly. I'm not sure if I should add some additional lube to prevent that, and if yes, what kind?

I have the same problem with many advanced lubes. I have no idea how top cubers solve this problem. The speed of the cube changes dramatically over the course of 30 minutes. Either it starts too slow and ends up good, or starts good and ends up too fast.
Thus far my only solution is to use almost no lube of any kind in my cubes. They are not as good, but at least they stay the same speed.

Is Lubicle 1 still relevant? Or is dignitas the better yet slower stickier version of Lubicle 1?

I noticed that TC doesn't use it in any of their setups. Is it just a lube that you would use on older used cubes? (For the repair properties)

I'm looking for a fast lube for my Gan 356 M, RS3M 2020, and MGC 4x4. (All new cubes) I already have a couple heavier silicone lubes, and they are slow and sticky feeling.

EDIT: I was thinking of adding Lubicle 1 as a protectant, work it in, then add a mix of DMN-37 and a lower weight silicone to slow down if needed. Something like Lubicle speedy. Thoughts?
