M' U M U' M' U M'

I prefer the OLL alg though when solving with Roux, since it is faster for me.

No kidding... I'll just use the Oll then...

whoah... 19.34... second sub 20... and using a method I learned 30 minutes ago... I like this method =) those M moves grow on you. I used to despise them but now I love them!

Roux Help thread

EDIT: I'm terrible at making the 1x2x3 block. It's several times faster for me to pretend to be doing F2L. How can I get better at this?

I don't understand step 4 of Roux (http://grrroux.free.fr/method/Step_4.html)
I have solved the cube twice using Roux. Once I somehow intuitively did step 4 in a few seconds (I must have been lucky). The second time I fooled around a bit and got the Z-perm. I really just don't understand the definition of a correctly oriented edge.
Maybe if there is an alternate guide somewhere, I could understand it better. Could anyone help me/show me a good guide/good youtube video?

He has a vid on it... he forgot one case though. IF you have to flip two opposite edges, it's R U R' U' M' U R U' r'

Edit: sorry I messed up on the Last R' it's actually r' instead... I'll fix that.

Roux help: Move count and general tips needed

Hello all.

I'm just picking up roux. At the moment I'm trying to learn CLL, although I know all of my time is picked up during the left and right blocks. I still have to get used to those to improve look ahead and such. Plus, my blocks take too many moves. :(

Anyway:
First block: about 9-11 moves
Second block: about 11-20 moves
CLL: Just an alg.
Rest of the cube: about 20-25 moves

This is pretty inefficiant so it would be very helpful to me if some good roux solvers read my example solves that follow and provide some tips and such for a beginning roux solver.

Example solve 1:
Scramble: U L R2 F R2 D2 L' B D U B2 D2 B2 F' U' R2 B2 U F2 D' B F2 L2 R2 B'
First block: x U' B' L' U' R F Lw F2 M' (9)
Second block: x y' U2 R' U F R' F' U Rw' U' Rw U R U' R' M U2 Rw U Rw' (19)
CLL: U Lw' U' L U R U' Rw' F (9)
4a: M' U M U' M'
4b: U' M U2 M' U M2
4c: U' M U2 M' (15)
Total: 52

Example solve 2:
Scramble: F D' F D' B F D U2 B2 R' B F' R' B L U' L' F' L2 D' B F2 D' R2 U'
First block: R F2 D' U F' U2 y L M' U' Lw U' (11) ...
Second block: x R' U2 M2 U' R2 U2 Rw' U' Rw U2 R U R' M' U2 M U' R U Rw' U' Rw (22) (deary me...)
CLL: y2 R U2 R' U' R U' R2 U2 R U R' U R (13)
4a: U M U M' U M' U M U M'
4b: U2 M U2 M
4c: U M' U2 M U2 (19)
Total: 65

Thank you for reading. Please help with some tips for move count, speed, or anything else. Oh and, I average about 37 for roux right now (versus my 17-18 second average for fridrich).

Thanks. ;)

To stop sucking at the first block, don't speedsolve it and don't be happy with longer than 8 moves. Try to find a decent solution, even if it means you have to stare at the cube for 10 minutes. Watch how good solvers do it and learn from them.

I really don't know what to say about those first block solutions. They make no sense to me.

Okay. I need first block help. I've taken the stickers off a cube except the 5 pieces and the center that I need to make the first block. I've been practising this a lot but my move count is still very high (between 8 and 10). Is there anything I'm missing here...?

nope. when speedsolving, that's the best you can do.

Just five days ago you said you were "picking up Roux" and now you've already practised it "a lot". It'll take longer than a few days, be patient.

Try using some optimal solver to get a lot of examples and learning from them. That has helped me a lot in many steps of many methods. There's no simple secret trick you're missing, just a lot of things to learn.

Woah, really? I assumed Roux users could get much lower than that (8-10). Is that for (partial) color neutrality or same block every time?

For speedsolving I would do:

Example 1:
First block: z' x F' U' F2 U2 x (4)
Second block: U' R U' R' U' R U R U' R' U2 R (12)
CMLL: U' F R U R' U' F' R U R' U' R' F R F' (15)
4A/4B: M2 U M' U M' (5)
4C: U M' U2 M2 M' U2 (6)

Total: 42

Example 2:
First block: z' x' L D' U2 R B' R U' F2 (8)
Second Block: r U' r' U' r' U2 R U R2 U R' U' R (13)
CMLL: R2 D R' U2 R D' R' U2 R' (9)
4A: M' U M U' M' U M' (7)
4B: U M' U2 M U' M2 U (7)
4C: M' U2 M' U2 M2 (5)

Total: 49

nope. when speedsolving, that's the best you can do.

I'm pretty sure most roux users average around that.

Roux vs Fredrich

I have been working with CFOP for a little while and feel like I am doing pretty good at it (not amazing, but consistently sub 60 with one or two +60 if I make a mistake). I started to learn 2LOLL and 2LPLL. I have most of those algs down. I was wondering if I should continue with Fredrich and try to get all (or almost all algs) or of I should switch to Roux (I've heard people can do that method fast).

People who use Roux will tell you Roux is better. People who use Fridrich will tell you Fridrich is better. With enough practice, you can get really fast with both methods. Try them both out and see which one you like to do most.

roux 40+ algos
full CFOP 21+57 algos(correct me if im wrong)
most of the top players use Fridrich ,maybe with some different variation
nuf say ...
edit: yes, u should try them yourself!and then opt
