[Help Thread] Petrus Discussion and Help thread

Here's a thought; why is Petrus even considered as one of the 3 major "speedsolving" methods. Lars himself never even broke a sub 20 average and it seems that the method was really made more for FMC? Obviously it's capable of speedsolving but is it really primarily a speedsolving method for say?

Hmmm well Lars does make reference to using it as a speedsolving method. Or at least solving the cube quickly here

Also this quote on the main page

Most people solve the cube layer by layer. This is a simple way for the human mind to approach the problem, but it is useless for speed cubing.
Neither really directly say anything about speedsolving with Petrus but meh, it's kind of insinuated. We know he uses it for speedsolving himself.

I have noticed a large burst in Roux users I have some mixed emotions about this....
Petrus seems like a very sensible method for speedsolving, It combines low movecount with a nice RU finish (for the most part)
What I don't like about petrus however is when you have large sections of your next block paired up and stuff they just have to be inserted, but you have EO to do.

Well, you can orient the edges in a manner that preserves pieces for step 4 quite easily. Sometimes I'll insert a pair and leave 2 edges unoriented, and fix them after with RU/LU. Other times it's as easy as doing something like U R U2 R' instead of R U' R'.

@CoolFrog: For all the times that you break a block when doing EO, you can also make blocks. Like Panda said you can control the way you orient to save blocks. You can also place or build blocks using EO.

@Sn3kyPandaMan: I consider the methods a different way. I'd say CFOP is on the highest tier right now. Petrus and Roux I think share the second tier together. CFOP seems to be the leader right now. This may be due to the larger user base though. I think Petrus has the potential to be sub-10, but I don't know if it can keep up with CFOP. It has a low movecount, but more difficult lookahead and less finger tricky moves.

I've been getting back into Petrus on 3x3x3. Practicing a bit the past couple days, I've gotten down to a 17s average, which is only a second slower than my CFOP average. I'd like to switch back to Petrus, it's so much fun. However I'm in love with 4x4x4 right now, and just can't Petrus on 4x4x4.

I was reading Lars' site yesterday and was curious why there aren't many fast people with this method. Are there more than a couple of people that are sub-15? What stage is the hardest with Petrus? It all seems like it should be fast, but I'm just not seeing any fast solvers on here. (Not trolling, genuinely curious)

trust me, you´re not!
but, i´d say extending first block is harder than doing EO.
however, i used to be fully color neutral, now i´m opposite neutral on yellow/white for pll. i find it easier to build blocks being color neutral, but slower on EO. now i´m faster on EO, do to having to locate less colors for orientation, but i´m slower at blockbuilding... damn!
by the way, i´m barely sub30, with a 18.5 single, so, i still have much to learn.
how do you deal with EO lookahead?

I've been learning Petrus, and I've been wondering what the average move count for the extension step should be. And what the maximum you'd need is. I think this is my slowest part.

Why's that? Don't tell me transition from edges to 3x3? You should Petrus with me! I've gotten back down to the 15s and 16s just recently myself.

Well, I'm using Yau right now, so I'd have to change that. Plus, Edges to 3x3x3 does take time for me. Maybe I'll switch to Petrus for 3x3x3 and race you? My Petrus and CFOP times are equivalent on 3x3x3 right now, 4x4x4 is really the only thing holding me back. What are you averaging with 4x4x4 right now, Sn3kyPanda?

I don't see why people have trouble with edges, they're almost automatic for me. If you're being colour neutral maybe that's the problem? I find EO recognition much quicker when I just use yellow/white.

Oh my I haven't touched a 4x4 in 2 years. Well...it's an eastsheen with the thickest tiles you've ever seen, and I haven't done a timed solve of it in 2 years. I've just never cared for the event.

I'm also astonished to see so many people having issues with edges. You must be newer to Petrus. EO is something that people have trouble with in the early stages but literally every single person I've ever spoken to that's sub 20 has said that expansion is the hardest step, or the entire 2x2x3 in general. The rest of the solve doesn't really require any thought. It's all patterns...

Edit: Also love that this thread lives =3

The front page is amusing.

well, before going, let me ask you all a question:

when you do step 1, 2x2x3 block, do you try to build the block behind the cube?? like doing cross on the botton. i´ve tried it, and i find it harder, but, then recognition of EO becomes easier, and i do less cube rotations, then i can look ahead better.

opinions?
