[Help Thread] Finger Tricks Discussion and Help

Just doing the following will get you a long way (enough for sub-3 to sub-2 PLLs):

- wrist R and L turns
- use index finger for all U turns
(right index for U, right index followed by middle for U2, left index for U')
- index for F, right thumb for F'

Just do each step in your algorithms slowly while following those guidelines, and on a decent cube (any lubed storebought is enough) you'll find yourself magically doing fingertricks without trying.

Thanks man. I am a beginner and this simple advice really helped.

Help with finger tricks for F and B face

I'm a fairly new speedcuber, averaging upper 30s.

The thing that I find slows me down most is not having a smooth transition when making moves that combine the F face and U face, or the B face and U face. Does anyone have any tips? Cause this seems to happen to me a lot when trying to F2l from different sides (to prevent y/y' moves) and during PLL.

Should I be looking for new algs or use different fingers? I usually use index fingers for U/F/B moves and don't know what I would use instead.

An example of what you would do in the following situation would be VERY helpful:

F2l that requires a L'UL to solve, but looking at it after a 'y' rotation to make the optimal solution: B'UB

I think doing the cube rotation would be quicker. I dont think there is any comfortable position for B or F that is quicker than L and R triggers. Instead of trying to reduce cube rotations using F and B try reducing them by using empty slots to pair up F2L pairs and slot them. If you find that you ever need to do an F or a B to slot in an F2L pair, I would just go ahead with the cube rotation. It seems quicker to me. XD

A lot of the time I use d moves to move pieces into position and also move the slot to a place where I can insert with RUL. I never use B, I rarely use F. For LL algs, I don't use B, but for F I either do a "cube rotation" by doing r instead of L for instance, and then use U for F turns. Or, I use my right index finger to flick it.

In RUR'F'RUR'U'R'FR2U'R'U' I do (RUR') then push the F face with my right index finger which is in position after the UR'. For the R'F my right index finger is on BUR sticker and it pulls the F turn after the R'.

@leeho: okay i'll stick to cube rotations, I just didn't know what people who got sub 20s averages did, cause by the looks of videos cube rotations barely existed. Thanks a lot!

@JohnnyA: d moves sound interesting, I'll experiment with them for a few days till I get used to it, thank you!

Btw, the example helps tons. Cheers!

Okay, I've started using d and d' moves for the past few hours, and they work pretty well, just need to get more used to it so I don't use them unnecessarily! :)

If you can't do d or d', then you should take rotation instead (cause sometimes you have a case where you don't have to take a U turn first).

its easier if you find your own finger tricks or just watch some youtube video's. thats what i did

Some Finger Tricks?

Hey guys. I just got a new DIY Cube which I jig-a-loo'ed and am breaking in. I was just wondering who to execute some fast moves. I know what the algorithm is I just dont know how to get faster at that algorithm. I may be holding my cube wrong etc. I can do R' U R' uber fast. but when it comes to anything with a F or F' or even R U R. I just dont know how to get fast at these!
Thanks in advance!

Edit: well I made a video which I will make a better one in the future but scroll down and click the link to tell me what I'm doin wrong haha! I know f2l is slow I'm working on it I've only been cubing for a month so am I doing good for this time I've had or am I behind? Tell me what you think! Thanks!

Use your thumb for F' and your index finger to push down for F. Also if you hold your hand with your fingers resting on the top of the R side and your thumb on the bottom of the R side you can do R U R super fast with no re-grip. As you do your R use your index finger to push the U and continue into the second R, just practicing and getting used to solving will also help you develop your own finger tricks based on what feels best for you.
