[Help Thread] Colour Neutrality Discussion

Hi! I have been color neutral for over a month now. For some reason, I get inconsistent times. Should I become opposite color neutral? How can I become more consistent with CN other than practice?

The only real way to get consistent with CN is with a lot of practice and a solid understanding of how to solve your cross in as few moves as possible. I replied to your last video with, "explain color neutrality", because I saw that for being color neutral some of your crosses were really long and inefficient as opposed to one solve where I saw excellent use of color neutrality. In general I think you'd benefit more from learning how to solve a cross efficiently rather than focusing on colors.

You also need to remember that despite the advantages of CN, plenty of really fast cubers use one cross color cross. A lot of people sort of jumped on the CN bandwagon after one of Thrawst's videos and Feliks' WRs, but in all honesty having a fixed cross color can be just as fast. But for you the first paragraph is more important than this.

I know. I will learn how to do the advanced cross and then just be opposite color neutral for my 1st comp(1 day). I will then memorize the color scheme for all the other colors and then do it.

Just testing how CN I am
White/Yellow Avg of 5 : 20.42 i.e 19.60, 17.16, 25.49, 21.23
Blue/Green Avg of 5 :19.81 i.e 22.41, 16.69, 19.59, 19.64, 20.20
Red/Orange Avg of 5 :17.38 i.e 19.17, 17.96, 23.80, 13.00(PB), 15.01

Very nice average on red/orange! Great improvement. :)

Would you say that you are fully color neutral? You would have to do more than an AO5 on each color to know whether you average better on certain colors. Why don't you do an AO50 on each of the three color pairs and post those times? I'm curious. You used to only solve blue and green, right?

Well, I am full CN. I was practicing blue and green in my youtube video. I am trying out what you said. If I am bad at other colors I might stick to red orange or practice the other ones more. Thanks.
EDIT:
I just did an AO5 for pairs on all 6 colors. Here are the results. I will post the entire A050 for each color later.
White:
*1 7.98
2 9.76
3 7.92
4 7.58
5 7.55
Average : 8.25
Yellow
time ao5
*1 9.61
2 8.06
3 8.56
4 7.31
5 7.72
Average: 8.11
Green
time ao5
*1 8.14
2 7.48
3 8.58
4 9.29
5 7.26
Average 8.07
Blue
1 10.96
2 8.14
3 6.92
4 6.90
5 10.12
Average: 8.39
Orange Average : 8.29
Red Average : 8.63

I can't draw a conclusion yet, but the times are almost the same.

Color neutrality worth it?

I just recently broke sub 30, and average about 28 seconds now. I was watching some x cross videos, and they all said that you need to be color neutral. I've tried a few solves, but the f2l was very slow. Should I bother learning this at this stage? Will it help me achieve sub 20?

Color Neutrality will definitely help you in the long run. It will worsen your times at first, but practice. After a while you will get same times with any color. It won't help you get sub 20, but ^. It is up to you. Come, on I've been CN ever since I started cubing and I now average 17-18. The earlier you switch, the better.

I am CN on 3x3 and have been for ~2 years. Though, on 4x4 I use Yau and can only start with white. I'm pretty sure Rob Yau himself is CN on 4x4 but I was wondering if anyone else is CN on 4x4 and could let me know if it is as beneficial to be CN on 4x4 as it is on 3x3. I know I can become CN if I wanted to and put in the time I just haven't decided if it is worth the time yet.

Edit: 300th post

Looking ahead when CN? Tips please? I often confuse colours when looking ahead!

This is because you switched to CN when you were sub 20. For some, reason I never confuse colors because when I look for cross pieces, my brain automatically registers the color and looks for those pieces. For you, I would recommend you to say the cross color before starting a solve, or just look at a pair(in inspection) of the cross color.

When to switch to color neutral

Hi. I average around 19-25 seconds and solve on different colors when I can. White/yellow seems the fastest for me right now - with recognition of F2L and cross pieces - but with other colors, I usually struggle with finding pieces. I find myself pausing more often with other colors but the times are about 2-3 seconds slower overall. The difference is not that much, but should 1. Continue doing this and gradually get faster at recognition 2. Work on each individual color until they are all comfortable or 3. Just stop doing that. Only do white/yellow cross.

Also one more thing which isn't color-neutral related. I can look ahead decently, but should I turn slowly in timed solves and look ahead or continue to spam TPS with no look ahead? I practice look ahead with slow turning.
