[Help Thread] Algorithm Memorization Discussion

You mean for help memorizing? Yes, i did. Several times. And i just thought that people that have done things that i needd advice on can help me. It should be flattering that im coming to you guys for help, and, @DNF_Cuber, it's not useless, i need help with getting better.

I memorized Full pll last week and it took me a few weeks. There was never a time when I just couldn’t memorize allgs. What do you mean you can’t memorize anymore algorithms. My only advice is to maybe memorize half of the algorithm and then memorize the other half. I did that for some of the g perms and n perms.

Not trying to be rude but if you look up how to memorize plls and none of the stuff you find helps then I'm pretty sure you have unrealistic expectations for learning. You can't expect to look at an alg and memorize it immediately, it takes a lot of repetition to drill it into your mind. There's no magic secret to memorizing algs, it takes a lot of work and dedication to learn larger sets. Also what do you mean "it should be flattering that im coming to you guys for help"? There's a reason there are a bunch of help threads out there. You could honestly get more eyes on your question using those as well since people reply and get notifications for that thread very often. Again, not trying to be mean to you in any way, just trying to help you out a bit. Early on when I joined the forums I posted unnecessary threads all the time (and still probably do lol). And as for the pll, again just trying to help you out, because getting better at cubing does get progressively harder as you go and there's no substitute for straight repitition and drilling algs. Sure it may be boring but it's the best way to get down any algs you're trying to learn.

try learning f perm, and j perms first. their easy because they just use t perm with set up moves, and you know t perm already as one of the corner swaps from 2 look pll. Next try the G perms. They are usually put off for looking complex, but really, their pretty easy. once you learn Ga and Gb, you can learn c and d pretty easily. this means including pll algs, youl have already learned 13 algs. T,Y,Ua,Ub,H,V,Ja,Jb,F,Ga,Gb,Gc,Gd.

We should have a megathread for memorizing algs help.

it's a lot easier to remember muscle memory and certain triggers. also nearly all algorithms have a "balance" to them, in that if you made let's say two R moves, they are undone later.

Does anyone have good ideas to memorize alg for f2l I'll and pll

For any alg what works for me is to do it 10-20 times while looking at the alg, then look away from the alg and try and remember it do it at your own pace. Repeat this about 2-3 times and you should start to remember it. This is the approach I use for most algs I learn. It can also help to understand what the alg is actually doing (what corners does it swap, how are the edges affected, etc.).

I have a 1 alg a day strategy (2 if mirror) where I just drill the alg im trying to learn. I will end up making tricks for my brain to remember the algorithm, and then I will keep drilling the alg until it is muscle memory.

Additionally, Practicing right before you sleep is scientifically proved to become better at that thing.

Look at the alg on alg.cubing.net, follow the alg and remember what it looks like, and do it over and over again until muscle memory. For me 'Photo memory' is better than 'move memory'. What I mean is I can remember where what colors go better than I can memorize the move sequence. Like in the RU get u perm, I remembered making a square and changing out 2 of the pieces in the square.

You can use Yo notation to memorise last layer algorithms. More details about the Yo notation in my signature.

But OLLs and PLLs are so easy in general, that you can find a bunch of good RUF triggers inside the alg.

How do I properly learn algs and remember them during solves?
I’m currently learning full OLL but some algs and the case they solve are hard for me to recall. How can I effectively learn algs?

For OLL, it helped me to learn similar algs that solve different cases.

So, wide/non-wide sune/antisune will solve a lot of OLLs. 18 that i can count.

This is my personal OLL/PLL sheet. Not at all optimal (I no longer use OLL) but you can get the idea from looking at the OLL tab.

Other than that, just practice and drill. Repeat. repeat. repeat.

Some cases are harder than others to recognize. The H and Pi cases are tough for me. i always spend an AUF to align them so that I'm always recognizing from the same angle. yes, it's not the fastest but it helps with all of the cases that look the same

After taking a break from learning Beginner CFOP, I am still stuck on memorizing all of the algorithms. I really want to learn CFOP but learning algorithms isn't very fun. Any tips to memorize them? Thanks!
