[Help Thread] ZZ and ZB Discussion

I've been considering non-matching blocks but it would mean learning a new recognition system for COLL if I wanted to do all block types (which is more appealing).

I guess I could just do opposite blocks. I'll try it out for a while.

How do you use pseudo blocks in a ZZ solve

scrmble; D' B' D' R B2 L' D' R' D' U2 R2 D F B' D' R' B2 L2 F2 D B' F2 U' B' U

EOLine) x'M'UMR2U2LB'RUR'B'Ur2y

Block 1) R'LU2RURURy2

Block 2) U'RUR'UR'U'R2URUR'U'RUR'U'R (Pseudo)

LL) RUR'URUL'UR'U'LU (R2) y'M2U'MU2M'U'M2

You can often cancel the pseudoblock into the LL.

what exactly do you mean by quad color neutral?

I can have green or blue on U, and white or yellow on L. Basically I view opposites as the same.

This leaves me with four possible cube orientations, hence quadsolving.

I want to switch but very slowly so I am kinda using a fredrich zz hyprid I believe it is called zz-f or something. ZZ is a very cool method so sign me up

There is no ZZ-f.

If you have a look at Zbigniew Zborowski's original polish ZZ page you'll find info on ZZ-f. Essentially, both ZZ-e and ZZ-f are alternative approaches to ZZ-d (orienting the corners during F2L). They differ in that they do it at different stages. ZZ-d does at the soonest possible moment, right after the first LH 1x2x3 block. In ZZ-e (what most people call ZZ-d), corner permutation is done during the final RH 1x1x2 slot. Finally, in ZZ-f the first two 1x2x2 blocks are built on each side, and then corner permutation is done during the LH 1x1x2 block.

Zbigniew Zborowski's original ZZ page is no longer available at its original location (speedcubing.com.pl/nooks_zz.htm), but you can still find it on web-archive.

To quote from a translated version of the page:
Zbigniew Zborowski said:
2.1.4 version of the classic (option d)
...
white orientation of all twelve edges and permutation of two opposite elements of the white cross
green left side of the cube (2x2x3 block) and the permutation of the other 6 corners
blue the right side of the cube (or F2L)
yellow ordering the yellow cross (EPLL) and orientation of corners (COLL) in one step

2.1.5 version of the classic sandwich (variant e)
...
white orientation of all twelve edges and permutation of two opposite elements of the white cross
green left side of the cube (2x2x3 block)
blue the right side of the cube (or F2L) permutation of the four corners and the last layer
yellow EPLL and COLL

2.1.6 version of the classic sandwich (variant f) by Gregory Łuczyna
...
white orientation of all twelve edges and permutation of two opposite elements of the white cross
green left and right ankle (rear blocks 2x2x1)
blue left ankle and a permutation of the other five horns
blue last slot, or complete the F2L
yellow EPLL and COLL

With regards to ZZ-Fridrich hybrids, the only one I know about is doing EOCross instead of EOLine. EOCross is very difficult to plan in one step and makes for an inefficient F2L. It has absolutely no advantages and is normally used by folks switching from Fridrich to ZZ, probably because of a reluctance to learn block building. I strongly advise against doing EOCross, because it will impede learning of the most fundamental ZZ techniques. Namely planning all of EOLine during inspection, and efficient blockbuilding during F2L.

Well I stand corrected.
That explains why I didn't see anything when I googled it. Silly Polish.

You are very right about this. EOCross just holds someone back from learning block building.

Hello everyone.
I just picked up my cubes again today for the first time in a few months, and I saw my name in this thread, so I thought I'd say hi.

Why I stopped: I was lubricating (and breaking in) A LOT of cubes (preparing to go away), and I noticed that my hands started to get itchy, but it was cold outside so I thought my hands were just really numb. When I came inside I noticed that my hands were very swollen and I noticed that my neck was also swollen.

So I realized I was allergic to silicon.
The next day I solved a few cubes -- and my hands started to swell up again.

Not that anyone would have noticed that I had been gone, but I just wanted to tell the story.

Anyway, I use ZZ (or try to anyway), but I have to work to bring my average back down to what it used to be months ago.
I'm about to read every post in this thread. :D
